This book focuses on novel implementations of sensor technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and statistics for automated, human fall recognition systems and related topics using data fusion. It includes theory and coding implementations to help readers quickly grasp the concepts and to highlight the applicability of this technology. For convenience, it is divided into two parts. The first part reviews the state of the art in human fall and activity recognition systems, while the second part describes a public dataset especially curated for multimodal fall detection. It also gathers contributions demonstrating the use of this dataset and showing examples. This book is useful for anyone who is interested in fall detection systems, as well as for those interested in solving challenging, signal recognition, vision and machine learning problems. Potential applications include health care, robotics, sports, human–machine interaction, among others.

Artificial Hydrocarbon Networks for Online Sales Prediction

2015 , Ponce, Hiram , Miralles-Pechuán, Luis , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes

Online retail sales have been growing worldwide in the last decade. In order to cope with this high dynamicity and market share competition, online retail sales prediction and online advertising have become very important to answer questions of pricing decisions, advertising responsiveness, and product demand. To make adequate investment in products and channels it is necessary to have a model that relates certain features of the product with the number of sales that will occur in the future. In this paper we describe a comparative analysis of machine learning techniques against a novel supervised learning technique called artificial hydrocarbon networks (AHN). This method is a new type of machine learning that have proved to adapt very well to a wide spectrum of problems of regression and classification. Thus, we use artificial hydrocarbon networks for predicting the number of online sales, and then we compare their performance with other ten well-known methods of machine learning regression, obtaining promising results.

Analysis of Contextual Sensors for Fall Detection

2019 , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes , Ponce, Hiram

Falls are a major problem among older people and often cause serious injuries. It is important to have efficient fall detection solutions to reduce the time in which a person who suffered a fall receives assistance. Given the recent availability of cameras, wearable and ambient sensors, more research in fall detection is focused on combining different data modalities. In order to determine the positive effects of each modality and combination to improve the effectiveness of fall detection, a detailed assessment has to be done. In this paper, we analyzed different combinations of wearable devices, namely IMUs and EEG helmet, with grid of active infrared sensors for fall detection, with the aim to determine the positive effects of contextual information on the accuracy in fall detection. We used short-term memory (LSTM) networks to enable fall detection from sensors raw data. For some activities certain combinations can be helpful to discriminate other activities of daily living (ADL) from falls. © 2019 IEEE.

Consumption of Profile Information from Heterogeneous Sources to Leverage Human-Computer Interaction

2013 , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes , González-Mendoza, Miguel

Ubiquitous computing brings new challenges to system and application designers. It is not enough to deliver information at any time, at any place and in any form; information must be relevant to the user. Ubiquitous user model interoperability allows enrichment of adaptive systems obtaining a better understanding of the user, but conflict resolution is necessary to deliver the best suited values despite the existence of international standards for different concepts. In this paper, we present the algorithm of conflict resolution to consume of profile information from the ubiquitous user model. We illustrate the enrichment of user models with one elemental concept for human-computer interaction: the language concept.

Distributed evolutionary learning control for mobile robot navigation based on virtual and physical agents

2020 , Ponce, Hiram , Moya-Albor, Ernesto , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes , Brieva, Jorge

This paper presents a distributed evolutionary learning control based on social wound treatment for mobile robot navigation using an integrated multi-robot system comprised of simulated and physical robots. To do so, this work proposes an extension of the population-based metaheuristic wound treatment optimization (WTO) method into a distributed scheme. In addition, this distributed WTO method is implemented on the multi-robot system allowing them to experience the environment in their own and communicate their findings, resulting in an emergence intelligence. We implemented our proposal using the combination of five simulated robots with one physical robot for tuning a navigation controller to move freely in a workspace. Results showed that the solution found by this multi-robot system aims using the output controller in the physical robot for successfully achieving the goal to move the robot around a U-maze, without applying any transfer learning approach. We consider this proposal useful in evolutionary robotics, and of great importance to decrease the gap related to transfer knowledge in robotics from simulation to reality. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Process of Concept Alignment for Interoperability between Heterogeneous Sources

2013 , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes , González-Mendoza, Miguel

Some researchers in the community of user modeling envision the need to share and reuse information scattered over different user models of heterogeneous sources. In a multi-application environment each application and service must repeat the effort of building a user model to obtain just a narrow understanding of the user. Sharing and reusing information between models can prevent the user from repeated configurations, help deal with application and services’ “cold start” problem, and provide enrichment to user models to obtain a better understanding of the user. But gathering distributed user information from heterogeneous sources to achieve user models interoperability implies handling syntactic and semantic heterogeneity. In this paper, we present a process of concept alignment to automatically determine semantic mapping relations that enable the interoperability between heterogeneous profile suppliers and consumers, given the mediation of a central ubiquitous user model. We show that the process of concept alignment for interoperability based in a two-tier matching strategy can allow the interoperability between social networking applications, FOAF, Personal Health Records (PHR) and personal devices.

Challenges in Data Acquisition Systems: Lessons Learned from Fall Detection to Nanosensors

2018 , Peñafort Asturiano, Carlos J. , Santiago, Nestor , Nuñez-Martínez, José , Ponce, Hiram , Martinez-Villaseñor, Lourdes

Falls are a major public health problem in elderly people often causing fatal injuries. It is important to assure that injured people receive assistance as quick as possible. Fall detection systems have gain more relevance nowadays. As more databases and fall detection systems are developed, there is more need to identify the challenges encountered in building and creating them. This paper addresses pre-processing, inconsistency and synchronization challenges that occur when creating a multimodal database for fall detection. We present different algorithms used to tackle these issues. We describe the issues and the corresponding solutions in order to document the lessons learned that could help others in data acquisition for multimodal databases. Applying the solutions to the issues found so far, we acquired an organized multimodal database for fall detection with 17 subjects. Furthermore, these lessons learned can be applied for data nanosensors acquisition and storage. © 2018 IEEE.
