Frente a un interés meramente económico, se contrapone el respeto a los ecosistemas, la exaltación de la riqueza cultural e histórica de las regiones y la posibilidad de integrar a las comunidades en los beneficios, toma de decisiones y operación de los programas de desarrollo turístico. Aspectos todos que implican un fuerte compromiso por parte de los organismos oficiales encargados de fomentar esta actividad. Lograr un desarrollo sustentable se traduce en volver compatibles la satisfacción de necesidades sociales actuales, con la preservación del equilibrio biofísico y social, presente y futuro. En México, este turismo representa una opción de crecimiento que conlleva grandes ventajas y desafíos. El ecoturismo se erige, pues, como una actividad de doble vertiente en la que desarrollo social y ecológico deben ir de la mano.Ecotourism is a global socio-economical phenomenon that raises new alternatives to tourist activities.
