    Cruz Aranda, Fernando
    The aim of this paper is to outline the methodology based on the use of Bayesian networks (BN) to identify and quantify operational risk (OR) factors associated with processing financial transactions through electronic means in a financial company. BN model developed is exemplified with data from simulated events equivalent to six years period, from information provided by experts in this type of process. This represents one of the main advantages of using BR, they allow modeling the cause-effect relationships between different OR factors. Finally operational value at risk (OpVaR) for the example is calculated, where interacting factors that are not considered in the traditional model are incorporated, providing better conditions of credibility to this value.

    The objective of this research is to analyze a test model of integrity and trust for the selection of human talent in organizations. To assess the reliability and validity of the test, two types of analysis were used. The first was done with classical theory models using the statistics Cronbach Alpha and Kuder-Richardson 2.0. The second is done using the Item Response Theory (IRT) through the Rasch model using the R software. The exam is done focusing on organizational psychopathy. The evidence shows reliability and validity in the analyzed, both for the questions and for the individuals examined. Rach model provides valuable information at the level of questions and subjects to have a better instrument. This research provides bidirectional knowledge i) in the personality tests applied in the organization and ii) by showing a methodology that can be used in any questionnaire to validate your answers

    Costos de generación, inversión y precios del sector eléctrico en México
    (2019)
    Enríquez, Alejandra
    ;
    Ramírez Sánchez, José Carlos
    Electricity prices have seen a consistent upward trend since the implementation of Mexico’s electricity market reform (emr). This has been interpreted by some as a failure of the emr. In this paper we study the determinants of such price increases. We calculate the generation cost curve of the Federal Electricity Commission prior to the entry into force of the reform. We then construct daily data on average prices during the emr. We also finally study the relationship between prices and transmission congestion rents. Our main results indicate that the most profitable types of generation technology are the ones resulting from the emr. Likewise, price increases have taken place despite the existence of a considerably larger number of competitors in the generation sector. Lastly, the strong correlation between prices and congestion revenues is evidence that the increase in prices under the emr is mainly due to the growing congestion in the national electricity transmission network rather than due to an inefficient competitive market design in the generation sector. © 2019 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Facultad de Economía. Differential privacy is commonly used for graph analysis in the interactive setting, were a query of some graph statistic is answered with additional noise to avoid leaking private information. In such setting, only a statistic can be studied. However, in the non-interactive setting, the data may be protected with differential privacy and then published, allowing for all kinds of privacy preserving analyses. We present a noise-graph addition method to publish graphs with differential privacy guarantees. We show its relation to the probabilities in the randomized response matrix and prove that such probabilities can be chosen in such a way to preserve the sparseness of the original graph in the protected graph. Thus, better preserving the utility for different tasks, such as link prediction. Additionally, we show that the previous models of random perturbation and random sparsification are differentially private, and calculate the guarantees that they provide depending on their specifications.

    El Acuerdo de Cooperación Laboral de América del Norte, diecisiete años después
    (2011)
    De Buen Unna, Carlos
    Carlos Salinas de Gortari, presidente mexicano del 1º de diciembre de 1988 al 30 de noviembre de 1994, se propuso insertar a México en la economía mundial, incorporándolo al exclusivo club de los países desarrollados. Para ello quiso aprovechar sus dos grandes ventajas competitivas: los tres mil kilómetros de frontera con los Estados Unidos de América y la muy barata mano de obra mexicana. El Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) sería el instrumento fundamental que, al abrir a México las fronteras del mercado más poderoso del mundo, atraería los grandes capitales del resto del planeta, que invertirían en nuestro país para de ahí exportar a ese mercado, generando, de paso, una importante derrama económica en el territorio mexicano. Hasta donde sabemos, nunca dijo Salinas si en su proyecto cabía la posibilidad de que algún día esas riquezas pudieran dar paso a políticas públicas orientadas a mejorar los salarios y las condiciones de vida de los mexicanos o si la mano de obra barata sería nuestro tributo permanente al gran capital.

    El rostro pobre de la diabetes en México
    (2018)
    Ramírez Sánchez, José Carlos
    ;
    Sota Riva, Marcela De la
    This paper aims at modeling the dynamics of social deprivations (SD) of the Mexican poor population in order to differentiate their material living conditions in the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus 2 (DM2). The idea is to offer evidence on the influence of some community economic and social factors in the chain of causes conditioning the development of DM2 among the poor. For this purpose, we hypothesize that the probabilities of experiencing SD in the Mexican population are higher in individuals with DM2 depending on the type of localities, SD and clinical risk factors considered. The main results drawn from a hidden Markov model support the hypothesis that a part of the poor population, which is rural and diabetic, is the one with the highest probability (current and future) of experiencing sd in Mexico. ©2018 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

    Entrepreneurship and innovation lab : a proposal for the enhancement of an entrepreneurial profile in undergraduate students
    (2017)
    Repellin Moreno, Adriana Agnes
    ;
    Mendieta Jiménez, Bertha Alicia
    An ageing society, the development of a computational world through artificial intelligence, a new media ecology and superstructured organizations in a globally connected world, are some of the main drivers of change form the fourth industrial revolution and reshape the future workforce landscape, according to a foresight study from the Institute for the Future (2011). Likewise, the World Economic Forum (2016), states that skills such as negotiation, service orientation, critical thinking, judgement and decision making, emotional intelligence, co-ordinating with others, creativity and complex problem solving are some of the most relevant for the workforce in the future economic context. Furthermore, such skills define an entrepreneur, thus entrepreneurial education becomes even more meaningful for a student’s undergraduate experience. For the purposes of this study, we understand entrepreneurial education as the initiatives that seek to prepare responsible and entrepreneurial people, with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to reach their established goals for a meaningful life (European Union, 2015). This profile makes university students versatile professionals, to become entrepreneurs, or change agents through employment. For this reason, Universidad Panamericana at Mexico City seeked to develop an entrepreneurial education project to enhance the students’ academic preparation. The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab was thus created, for the purpose of strengthening the students’ knowledge and skills for successful entrepreneurship, by scaling their academic projects to entrepreneurial plans. The learning experience designed to achieve this goal, included interdisciplinary teams of students from 5 different majors. They worked through an online introductory course, a networking space, and two “lab days” of conferences and workshops to explore topics such as value proposition, business model, innovation strategy, financial structure, technological routes, communication and planning, leadership and social responsibility. This study aims to explore the experience of the students that participated in the first edition of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab, and how it helped them strengthen their entrepreneurial skills. Research was conducted through a qualitative approach, with individual interviews and focus groups. Results show how students valued the possibility to scale up their own academic projects to entrepreneurial plans, work with interdisciplinary student teams, and receive practical guidance from entrepreneurship experts. Students also shared how they learned to deeply understand the problems they were interested in, and validate their propositions through a practical approach. As a final result, this study proposes effective strategies to develop entrepreneurial profiles in undergraduate studies and recommendations for the design of learning experiences.

    Everything is connected : exploring pathways towards environmental awareness within Universidad Panamericana’s community through a learning by design, active and multidisciplinary experience
    (2018)
    Mendieta Jiménez, Bertha Alicia
    ;
    Repellin Moreno, Adriana Agnes
    This work describes the design process to develop an innovative learning methodology for the socialization of sustainability issues with the aim of sharing good practices and making them replicable in various educational contexts at different levels. Socializing an encyclical letter through an active, interactive, and innovative experience that encouraged the commitment of the campus community towards ecological conversion, was the objective with which we designed the “Everything is Connected” Workshop. We explain how Universidad Panamericana acquired the task of socializing the contents of the Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ as a member of the Inter-American Chair Laudato Si’. Then we discuss how the key contents can be translated into pedagogical design principles for workshop planning, as well as the elements of the Learning by Design and Visible Thinking pedagogical theories that were applied to the workshop strategy and materials design. Finally we present the results of the participants experience in the Workshop. ©2018 Iated Academy S.L.

    Fair-MDAV: An Algorithm for Fair Privacy by Microaggregation
    (2020)
    Salas, Julián
    ;
    González Zelaya, Carlos Vladimiro
    Automated decision systems are being integrated to several institutions. The General Data Protection Regulation from the European Union, considers the right to explanation on such decisions, but many systems may require a group-level or community-wide analysis. However, the data on which the algorithms are trained is frequently personal data. Hence, the privacy of individuals should be protected, at the same time, ensuring the fairness of the algorithmic decisions made. In this paper we present the algorithm Fair-MDAV for privacy protection in terms of t-closeness. We show that its microaggregation procedure for privacy protection improves fairness through relabelling, while the improvement on fairness obtained equalises privacy guarantees for different groups. We perform an empirical test on Adult Dataset, carrying out the classification task of predicting whether an individual earns per year, after applying Fair-MDAV with different parameters on the training set. We observe that the accuracy of the results on the test set is well preserved, with additional guarantees of privacy and fairness.

    How to generate a motivative, effective, trusting, innovative and creative work environment that fosters the creation of innovative educational experiences : Smart Center ideation
    (2020)
    Repellin Moreno, Adriana Agnes
    ;
    Nicolás Gavilán, María Teresa
    Nowadays, education institutions seek to innovate their methodologies to enhance their learning processes to be more effective. To achieve this, it is fundamental for the people who create educational experiences to build a high-performance work team. For this, working in atmospheres that foster motivation, effectiveness, creativity, innovation, and trust is vital. Project managers play a central role in setting the work environment that generates a high-performance work team. A high-performance work team is "a group of goal-focused individuals with [...] complementary skills who collaborate, innovate and produce a consistently superior result. "[1] This paper presents the project management process that SMART CENTER, a student center at Universidad Panamericana, followed to achieve an innovative, effective and highly engaging experience called SMART Room for more than 100 students in a time frame of 5 weeks and a team of only 10 people. This article will cover each step taken for the ideation, organization, planning, and execution of the SMART Room and will explain the basic principles so that anyone can replicate it in their teams and projects. ©2020 Journal of Strategic Innovation and Sustainability; North American Business Press.

    Impact of exchange rate derivatives on stocks in emerging markets
    (2020)
    Bernal-Ponce, L. Arturo
    ;
    Castillo Ramírez, Claudia Estrella
    ;
    Venegas-Martínez, Francisco
    This paper investigates the effect of derivatives on the relationship between the foreign exchange rate and the stock market. A theoretical model is used to extend the understanding of that relationship. Also, the model is tested with an empirical analysis using the GMM strategy for the Mexican and Brazilian stock markets for the period 2007 to 2019. Findings reveal that in addition to the spot exchange rate, exchange rate futures explain the currency exposure, wherein the derivative effect is the most prominent. The result implies that both risk sources should be considered in the implementation of risk management or macroeconomic policy. The theoretical results are extended by applying them to international portfolio management, proposing a strategy to mitigate foreign exchange exposure with derivatives. This study contributes to the literature by explaining why the minimum variance hedge ratio plays an essential role in the foreign exchange rate and stock market nexus. © 2020 The Author(s). Increasing university students engagement : a guide on how to achieve it in extracurricular non-mandatory academic experiences based on Success Center know how
    (2020)
    Repellin Moreno, Adriana Agnes
    ;
    Rojano, Regina
    Since Success Center creation in September 2017, 1,042 students have participated in the center academic experiences. This represents approximately 25% of the University population. The participation of the students is undoubtedly due to the strategies implemented by the center to generate engagement with students. The meaning of student engagement varies from author to author. For this article, we will define student engagement as the degree of involvement, interest, motivation, and attention that students display in their learning process and how connected they are with: 1) the university environment, 2) the university activities, 3) their peers, teachers and the academic staff. For Hobsons, (2019) there are three types of engagement: “Academic engagement refers to how students react to their classwork, lessons, homework, testing, and the hands-on learning that occurs in a school environment. Social engagement contains any participatory activities that happen in school, such as friendships with other students, clubs and activities, special events, or sports. Emotional engagement refers to the personal relationships that students make with adults in their school community (p.6)”. This paper presents how Success Center, an academic center for students in Universidad Panamericana, has increased university students' engagement in extracurricular non-mandatory academic experiences. To attract students' attention, involvement, interest, and motivation it is necessary to take into account and to implement strategies in the three types of engagement exposed above. This article will cover the basic principles to do this, will show specific successful examples, and a guide for anyone that wants to implement this practice in their learning environment. ©2020 INTED2020 Proceedings

    Is NAFTA really advantageous for Mexico?
    (2017)
    Ramírez Sánchez, José Carlos
    ;
    Calderon Villarreal, Cuauhtemoc
    ;
    Sánchez León, Sarahí
    This article suggests that the much trumpeted US trade deficit with Mexico is only an accounting matter concealing the real story behind the transactions between these two countries and Canada. The statistical exercise performed here shows that the deficit has not made Mexico a net winner from NAFTA. On the contrary, Mexico has had a progressive deterioration of its competitiveness with respect to its exports. The deficit in a trading scheme such as NAFTA is especially healthy for the US because it reflects the proper functioning of the intra-industry trade that is performed by its big companies. © 2018 Taylor & Francis.

    Los determinantes de las variaciones en el rendimiento del oro
    (2020)
    Ramírez Sánchez, José Carlos
    En este trabajo se caracteriza el comportamiento de los rendimientos logarítmicos del oro entre 1995 y 2017 con base en varios modelos de media y varianza condicionales, que incorporan efectos de asimetría y colas pesadas. Para tal efecto, se lleva a cabo, primero, un análisis basado en vectores autorregresivos con el fin de identificar los principales regresores externos y, luego, una serie de ajustes con distintas especificaciones del tipo AR-GARCH para pronosticar la volatilidad de las fluctuaciones del oro con base en dichos regresores. La conclusión principal es que esas fluctuaciones pueden ser adecuadamente explicadas por el comportamiento de las series de USDEER y SP500 de acuerdo con la especificación AR(1)-GARCH(1,1) que tiene asociada una distribución t de Student. Esto quiere decir que los determinantes de largo plazo de las variaciones del rendimiento del oro están relacionados con las estrategias cambiarias y de protección contra el ciclo del mercado de valores por parte de los inversionistas.

    Mexican Trade Unionism in a Time of Transition
    (2004)
    De Buen Unna, Carlos
    This chapter traces the history of corporatist unionism in Mexico since the Revolution. It reflects particularly on union fortunes since the opening of the Mexican economy in the 1980s, vividly illuminating the defects of a model of union action premised upon dependence on and incorporation into a one-party political structure. It explores the challenges Mexican unions face in this period and also the opportunities transition holds out to build a stronger and more representative labour movement. It first recounts the origins and development of the current political crisis, and then steps backward in time to sketch the history of Mexican unions and the development of Mexico's particular system of industrial relations and unionism. The concluding portion discusses the current crisis of the corporatist model and the prospects for Mexican unionism that lie ahead.

    Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Reform in the Context of a New Trilateral Agreement (NAFTA-USMCA)
    (2019)
    Ramírez Sánchez, José Carlos
    ;
    Massa Roldán, Ricardo
    This article argues that Mexico’s energy reform has allowed the country to increase trade flows among the participant countries of NAFTA-USMCA at the expense of widening its trade deficit in oil, gas, and gasoline. Actions that are currently being undertaken by Mexico’s President seem to potentially stress this deficit and are expected to weaken Mexico’s energy independence in light of the provisions of the new trilateral agreement. An analysis of convergence dynamics confirms this panorama by showing a strong relationship between Mexico’s crude oil exports to the United States, and from the latter’s exports of petroleum products to the first. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Optimal consumption decisions of family networks with similar felicity functions
    (2019)
    Palafox-Roca, Alfredo Omar
    ;
    Rodríguez Aguilar, Román
    ;
    Castillo Ramírez, Claudia Estrella
    ;
    Venegas-Martínez, Francisco
    Family networks have increased at an accelerated pace through social networking through social networking services, online platforms, and social media clubs. This paper develops a model of an economy populated by networks of families with similar preferences (the same functional form of the felicity or utility function) but family members differ in their deep parameters (compulsion for consumption and risk tolerance), which, in turn, leads to some kind o heterogeneity among the families. In this context, the problem of felicity (utility) maximization of the average family in the network is solved. The optimal path of consumption is obtained for the average family and graphical comparative static exercises are performed. Finally, the economic welfare of the typical family in a network is calculated and comparative static experiments are carried out. This approach improves the understanding of the consumption decision making of families interacting in social networking services. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
