Marine pollution has been one of the most important problems we need to address in modern days, as it can cause an imbalance in the marine life of a body of water. This work presents a proof-of-concept of an underwater unmanned autonomous vehicle for detecting dissolved solids. The system was designed based on the mechatronics engineering model, so that it can move around a body water while measures the solid particles in water. The preliminary results are promising, and we anticipate the use of this low-cost system to help measuring water pollution in near city body waters. ©The authors ©IEEE.

Elderly people have increased at an accelerated rate in recent years. In Mexico, one of the main problems affecting this population are related to disabilities, specifically limited mobility, i.e., arthritis in older adults. Different technological solutions have been proposed, such as electrical wheelchairs. However, for arthritic people, these wheelchairs are difficult to operate, lacking comfortability, and might be very expensive. In this work, we propose the development of a smart wheelchair for arthritic older adults able to move automatically and controlled by using slight manual movements of the hand and by voice commands. We followed the general methodology of a mechatronic design. A proof-of-concept model of the wheelchair was implemented. For validation, we tested the prototype in different real indoor scenarios. Results conclude that our proposed smart wheelchair complies with the user requirements, it is easy to operate, and the cost is reduced considerably. We anticipate this is a low-cost efficient smart wheelchair prototype that can be further considered for real technological solutions.

Leaving unattended a medical treatment may have consequences, from prolonging a recovery waiting time to mortal circumstances. rent technological solutions have been proposed for this problem, including pillboxes and automated pill dispensers. In that sense, this paper aims to present the development of an automatic pill dispenser to improve attention on medical treatment when a patient does not take medicine on time. The implementation considers two components: A fixed device that works as the main automated pill dispenser, and a portable device that can communicate with the fixed device in order to synchronize medical treatment information in both devices. Experimental results proves that this functional prototype improves the number of times a patient not forget to follow a medical treatment and it reduces the delays in taking pills. © 2017 IEEE.

Overwhelming amount of waste is generated every year globally. This problem has been shown to be significant interenst in solving the waste managament, e.g. land filling is a common practice. However, environmental issues are presented. In particular, land filling is an expensive method in terms of the volume cost, so compactors are required to accomodate more waste. Different compactors have been developed for both mobile and static usage mode as the automatic compacting receptacles normally used for fast food areas, mall food courts, airports, parks or any public areas. But, they are designed for mixed waste and prevent for recycling. In that sense, this paper aims to present a proof of concept of an automatic compacting recepticle system exclusivey for aluminium cans. Using a mechatronics design, the proposal was implemented in a functional prototype. Preliminary results detected strengths and weaknesses of the proposal, also suggesting that the proposal can be applied for public areas in near future. © 2017 IEEE.

Apiculture has been a method for harvesting honey and helping crop proliferation, nonetheless late climate changes have affected bee population. Having an automated hive as a tool for beekeepers would help to increase and protect current bee population guaranteeing crop proliferation needed for human consumption. In this paper, we propose an electronic beehive that recollect honey automatically, regulate the temperature of the inner hive and distribute food for bees. Preliminary results showed the control and automation of the proposed system as well as the prototype implementation, concluding that the automated beehive might be able to improve bee proliferation and crop betterment in an automated way. © 2017 IEEE.

One of the problems facing autonomous navigation is obstacle sensing and dynamic surroundings. Multi-sensor systems and omni directional vision systems have been implemented to increase the observability of robots. However, these approaches consider several drawbacks: the cost of processing multiple signals, synchronization of data collection, cost of materials and energy consumption, among others. Thus in this paper, we propose a new 360-degree vision system for mobile robot navigation using a static monocular camera. We demonstrate that using our system, it is possible to monitor the complete surroundings of the robot with a single sensor, i.e. the camera. Moreover, it can detect the position and orientation of an object from an egocentric point of view. We also present a low cost prototype of our proposal to validate it. © 2018 IEEE.

Some of the most serious problems in cities are soil pollution and littering in public places. The amount of litter pilled up in the venues of public parks is so much that it indirectly causes different phenomena like insecurity, crime and promotes more pollution. In that sense, this paper presents the design of an autonomous robotic system for performing the tasks of collection, sweeping, vacuuming and cleaning at ground level. This work shows a proof-of-concept and a prototype in order to validate the proposed mechatronics system. Experimental results show that this machine is able to clean wide areas, promoting less pollution and litter in public spaces like parks. © 2018 IEEE.

Caring for the elderly and sick people is one of the biggest concerns of families. Those who experience the responsibility and the enormous work involved in this care recognizes that all kind of help it's welcomed. The objetive of this paper is to present Nurse-bot as a mechatronics system for taking care of the elderly and sick people. In particular, we refer this device not only as a tool, but with the time and development a true support to the people. It is like-a nurse made robot that monitors vital signs and keeps the information, so that the attending physician has up-to-date parameters before the consultation that allows a better follow-up of the results of the prescribed treatment made by a specialist. A proof-of-concept and the first prototype is presented in this work. Experimental results shows insights that this robot can help people. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, a mechatronic design of a firefighter drone is presented. Unmanned aerial vehicles have been around for years, they present characteristics that aloud them to be used for different purposes. Nowadays, these devices have become more popular and their application increases rapidly in various fields. This paper focuses on the implementation of a low cost device that can help to control a fire. By implementing a mechatronic device, it is possible to spot a fire on time, and extinguish it without risking humans lives. It is an emergency responder device that can assist firemen in fighting high rise fires. The description of the proposed mechatronic system is briefly described, as well as experiments that demonstrate its principal functionality. © 2018 IEEE.
