Narrative, Practical Reasoning and Rational Desire

2022 , Hernández-González, Sandra

Abstract of book One of the fundamental aspects of the cultural landscape of the last century has been the revival of philosophical anthropology, often in the form of a radical examination of the humanum. This renaissance constitutes an attempt to meet the primary challenges posed by an era which profoundly doubts the very possibility of a semantics of humanism. This book argues that MacIntyrean thought offers an important contribution to the development of a new semantics of humanism, since it enables dialogue and rational competition among perspectives belonging to rival intellectual traditions. The volume explores a variety of fresh, intriguing takes on the question of rationality and the human in an age of advanced modernity.

The Practice of Governance, Social Compartmentalization and Fragmentation of Desires

2024 , Hernández-González, Sandra

This article aims to relate natural teleology to the practice of governance. To do so, it presents the phenomenon of social fragmentation and evaluates it –following A. MacIntyre– as a negative aspect of contemporary social (dis)order due to the moral and psychological disintegration it promotes among ordinary people. Such disintegration leads to conflict and confusion between desires and goods. Among the causes of fragmentation, analytical philosophy and the social theory of existentialism stand out and, at their core, the abandonment of natural teleology. Institutional governance is not immune to fragmentation, so the author suggests that a perspective that explicitly integrates natural teleology in the practice of governance may have practical implications in decision-making and can constitute a significant, albeit partial, contribution to achieving social and moral cohesion.

Bosch, M. (ed.). (2020). Desire and Human Flourishing: Perspectives from Positive Psychology, Moral Education and Virtue Ethics. Springer. 451 pp.

2022 , Hernández-González, Sandra

In recent years, moral education, emotional intelligence, and character education have been a focal point in the studies of human action theory and affective formation. However, philosophy addresses the role of desire in action theory and affectivity poorly. It has not been studied systematically; thus, a greater understanding of its nature and role in human development is required. Based on these considerations of the role of desire in moral life and virtue, and as a result of deep reflection and research throughout her academic career, Dr. Magdalena Bosch lays the first stone in constructing a bridge between virtue ethics, desire, and character formation.
