    Social network analysis and narrative structures: measuring communication and influence in a Medieval source for the Kingdom of Sicily

    The concept of Open Government is supported on three foundations: Transparency, Collaboration, and Participation. Libraries are democratic spaces that encourage social cohesion and guarantee equal opportunities for information access. Despite the implications of the digital communication era, the construction of libraries is still underway. Also and to a greater extent, their design incorporates spaces that lead to social interaction and freedom of expression among their communities. This becomes relevant for academic libraries since they have an impact on training critical citizens who are also committed with their environment. This investigation employs a mixed research methodology describing the situation of academic library buildings in Mexico, with an emphasis on collaborative work spaces in the libraries of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí.

    Nonsense and irony: wittgenstein’s strategy of self-refutation and kierkegaard’s concept of indirect communication
    (Universidad Panamericana. Facultad de Filosofía, 2017)
    Mualem, Shlomy
    En el prefacio al Tractatus, Wittgenstein establece que la cuestión del sinsentido tiene que ver con trazar los límites del lenguaje. Las expresiones sinsentido van más allá de los límites del lenguaje significativo y residen “del otro lado” de lo que puede ser dicho. Aún así, al final del libro declara que sus propias proposiciones son, hablando de manera estricta, sinsentidos. El presente trabajo pretende analizar la estrategia de auto-refutación del primer Wittgenstein como un modo de trascender los límites del lenguaje, comparando su concepto de “sinsentido” (Unsinn) con la visión de Kierkegaard acerca de la comunicación indirecta y de la ironía socrática.

    Mexico’s Exchange Rate Policy Restrictions on a High Volatility Environment
    (Routledge, 2018)
    ;
    Luis Raul Rodríguez-reyes
    The Mexican Peso (MXN) is one of the most traded currencies in the world. Such trading volume does not match the relative size of the Mexican economy or its international trade volume. This intensified trading activity is mostly related with the free exchange features of the MXN, as it does not have barriers or taxes that hinder its exchange with other major currencies, and its liquidity. Both features transformed the MXN from a free trading currency of a relatively medium size country into the Latin America financial asset of reference in international markets, particularly in its parity with the US dollar. In this research paper we study the USD-MXN exchange rate volatility, from the policy-maker perspective, and the limits imposed to the central bank to fight speculative attacks towards Mexican currency, as most trading on such parity occurs overseas, away from the country’s regulatory reach. This analysis is conducted taking into account the use of the Mexican currency as a hedge for falling prices in commodities’ international prices, mainly with the use of derivatives on the USD-MXN exchange rate. In this new environement, the source of the exchange rate volatility is not related to flawed economic fundamentals or political uncertainty, as it was in the last decades of the XX century, but, volatility now comes from the existence of financial speculators and other agents that heavily rely on the Mexican peso, mainly in the form of derivatives, to operate in international financial markets.

    The aim of this article is to determine the socioeconomic level (SEL) with disaggregation of the Basic Statistical Area (BSA) in the Mexican Republic. The methodology used is the one established by the Mexican Association of Market Research Agencies (AMAI) along with the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). The Clustering of the BSAs was carried out according to variables contained in the Population and Housing Census of 2010, through Gaussian mixture models, learning neural networks and finally, by defining the labels corresponding to each SEL. We found the existence of a representative SEL for each BSA. In addition, the definition of each socioeconomic level shows good results with an average of 90.86% of correctly labeled elements.

    Social and ethical aspects of media economics research
    (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2019)
    ;
    Alan B. Albarran
    This work aims to contribute to research on media economics with a holistic vision, as suggested by Albarran (2017) and Godoy (2016), considering the importance of the ethical and social aspects in the media economy. The structure of the chapter is divided into four parts. Part one deals with the concept of the media firm according to the current digital environment of the industry. The second part deals with the role of ethics in media economy. The third part shows the media company links with the ethical aspects, while the final section includes the social aspects that have strong influence in the media economy in the 21st century. Finally, a research agenda is presented.

    The enhancement in the workability of Portland cement concrete when coal fly ashes are added to the mix is well‐known. This behaviour has been attributed to the spherical shape and the smooth surface of the fly ash particles. On the other hand, when other combustion residues with pozzolanic properties are added to concrete mix formulations, a loss in workability is observed, and an increase in water content may be necessary for obtaining a satisfactory plastic consistency of the concrete, or alternatively chemical additives may be used (plasticizers and superplasticizers). The effect of the combination of fly ash with other mineral admixtures in respect of the effect on the workability of mortars has been studied. The pozzolanic combustion residues examined were: silica fume, sewage sludge ash, spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst and rice husk ash. Additionally, and due to the pozzolanic properties of coal fly ash and these residues, the strength developments of Portland cement mortars containing fly ash and the selected admixtures have also been measured
