Item type:Publication, Development and validation of a questionnaire to assess the health related Social Capital for Chronic Kidney Disease among Mexican adolescents(Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2025) ;Quiñones-Villalobos, Carolina ;Prado-Aguilar, Carlos Alberto; ;Arreola-Guerra, José ManuelPadilla-López, JannettBackground: Social Capital on health has been studied widely, to date there is no valid and reliable questionnaire that measure it in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Objective: To develop, validate and assess the reliability of Social Capital related to CKD questionnaire for Mexican adolescents. Methods: An instrumental study was employed to validate a questionnaire that assesses the cognitive and structural domains of Social Capital related to CKD. The questionnaire was generated by operationalization of the constructs and validated by assessing the content, face validity, criteria and construct validity. Reliability was assessed through the Cronbach´s alpha. Results: The content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed through Kendall’s W of 0.925 (p = 0.01) and its face validity was evaluated by four focus groups. A principal component analysis on a sample of 281 adolescents indicated that 72.78% of the variance was explained by the cognitive domain and 83.20% by the structural domain. A confirmatory analysis returned a chi-squared value of 142.99 (p = 0.05), a CFI of 0.97, a TLI of 0.96, a RMSEA of 0.040 and a SRMR of 0.07 for the cognitive domain. Similarly, a chi-squared of 408.296 (p < 0.001), a CFI of 0.98, a TLI of 0.97, a RMSEA 0.03 and a SRMR of 0.06 were returned for the structural domain. The validity of the criteria was assessed through a Pearson’s correlation for both the cognitive and structural domains. There was a mild-to-strongly significant correlation (p ≤ 0.001) among items and dimensions within each domain, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.23 to 0.83. As a determinant of the reliability of the questionnaire, the Cronbach’s alpha was 0.84 and 0.94 for the cognitive and structural domain, respectively. Item type:Publication, Smoothed Spherical Truncation based on Fuzzy Membership Functions: Application to the Molecular Encoding(2019) ;García‐Jacas, César R.; ;Brizuela, Carlos A. ;Suárez-Lezcano, JoséA novel spherical truncation method, based on fuzzy membership functions, is introduced to truncate interatomic (or interaminoacid) relations according to smoothing values computed from fuzzy membership degrees. In this method, the molecules are circumscribed into a sphere, so that the geometric centers of the molecules are the centers of the spheres. The fuzzy membership degree of each atom (or aminoacid) is computed from its distance with respect to the geometric center of the molecule, by using a fuzzy membership function. So, the smoothing value to be applied in the truncation of a relation (or interaction) is computed by averaging the fuzzy membership degrees of the atoms (or aminoacids) involved in the relation. This truncation method is rather different from the existing ones, at considering the geometric center for the whole molecule and not only for atom-groups, as well as for using fuzzy membership functions to compute the smoothing values. A variability study on a set comprised of 20,469 compounds (15,050 drug-like compounds, 2994 drugs approved, 880 natural products from African sources, and 1545 plant-derived natural compounds exhibiting anti-cancerous activity) demonstrated that the truncation method proposed allows to determine molecular encodings with better ability for discriminating among structurally different molecules than the encodings obtained without applying truncation or applying non-fuzzy truncation functions. Moreover, a principal component analysis revealed that orthogonal chemical information of the molecules is encoded by using the method proposed. Lastly, a modeling study proved that the truncation method improves the modeling ability of existing geometric molecular descriptors, at allowing to develop more robust models than the ones built only using non-truncated descriptors. In this sense, a comparison and statistical assessment were performed on eight chemical datasets. As a result, the models based on the truncated molecular encodings yielded statistically better results than 12 procedures considered from the literature. It can thus be stated that the proposed truncation method is a relevant strategy for obtaining better molecular encodings, which will be ultimately useful in enhancing the modeling ability of existing encodings both on small-to-medium size molecules and biomacromolecules. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Scopus© Citations 2 8 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, What Drives Profit Income in Mexico’s Main Banks? Evidence Using Machine Learning(2023) ;González-Rossano, Carlos; ; Historically, the banking system has been critical to the development of economies by addressing funds efficiently—from customer savings and investors to the productive activities of people and companies, financing consumer goods and current expenses, housing, infrastructure projects and providing liquidity to the market. However, it must be transformed to respond to emerging demands in society for better financial products and services with a positive impact on living conditions and well-being. To achieve this, banks must create economic value—that is to say, banks should create profits in a sustained manner—in order to also create social value and thus generate shared value. The purpose of this study was twofold. The first aim was to identify the main factors that contributed to the majority of Mexican banking profits in the period from 2003 to 2021; the second aim of the study was to provide an innovative metric of banking performance. Using supervised machine learning algorithms and Principal Component Analysis, two prediction models were tested, and two banking performance indices were defined. The findings show that Random Forest is a reliable profit prediction model with a lower mean absolute error between the predicted yearly profit and losses and the actual data. There are no significant ranking position differences between the two performance indices. The first performance index obtained is novel due to its simplicity, since it is built on the basis of five values associated with commercial banking activity. In Mexico, no similar studies have been published. The indicator most widely used by regulators worldwide is the CAMELS index, which is a weighted average of the capital adequacy level, asset quality, management capacity, profitability, liquidity, and sensitivity to market risk. Its scale of 1 to 5 is useful for identifying the robustness and solvency of a bank, but not necessarily its capacity to generate profits. Item type:Publication, Proposal for a comprehensive environmental key performance index of the green supply chain(2020)The consideration of environmental objectives in the design of green supply chains creates the need to build a set of key performance indicators for monitoring and control. There is a set of generally accepted environmental indicators for monitoring environmental objectives in the supply chain. However, so far these indicators have been disconnected from the operational and economic indicators of the supply chain. It is important to consider these elements in the integral performance of a green supply chain. Item type:Publication, Local institutions in Peru and the presence and number of fast-food outlets(2017); Navarro Castañeda, SandroPurpose: The paper aims to study the role of local institutions in the establishment of fast-food outlets in urban districts of Peru. In most urban districts, there are no fast-food outlets. The authors, therefore, study the effect of institutional quality on the presence or absence of these outlets and the number of outlets if these are present. Design/methodology/approach: The theoretical framework in which this paper is based on is the theory of agglomeration, which establishes that firms benefit from being close to each other. In particular, the paper builds on a model of market entry and competition in geographically independent local markets. An explicit expression was found for the equilibrium number of outlets (including zero) as a function of exogenous determinants of the demand for fast-food in each market, available infrastructure and institutional quality of the district’s government. Principal component analysis was used to construct measures of institutional quality based on administrative and organizational characteristics of district’s municipalities. These measures were incorporated as explanatory variables in a zero-inflated Poisson model, which is appropriate to handle count data and to accommodate excess zeros and which also allows the specification of different models for the zero part and the positive part. Findings: Institutional quality mainly affects the presence of fast-food outlets in a district. The quality of urban development management and use of information systems are relevant. An institutional variable particularly relevant in explaining the number of outlets is the presence of an investment programming office in the municipality. The authors confirm the general hypothesis of the paper: institutions have a role in explaining both the presence and number of fast-food outlets in a district. Overall, the results of this paper suggest that institutional quality of a municipal district is related to better infrastructure, which lowers the costs of establishing outlets. Research limitations/implications: Limitations in the availability of data at the regional and urban district level did not allow the authors to analyze other factors that affect entry decisions in the fast-food industry in Peru, such as controls to prevent corruption, legal uncertainty or crime. Another limitation was the lack of data on entry costs for each franchisee in each urban district. This forced the authors to use public infrastructure characteristics of the district as (imperfect) proxies of the entry costs. Practical implications: The instruments of urban development management and information systems can be effective at attracting investment to a district. These tools operate partly through an indirect effect, namely, the improvement of district infrastructure, which is necessary to reduce the costs of establishing companies. There is also synergy between national government’s programs to attract investment and the good institutional quality in local governments. On the contrary, poor local institutions can be an obstacle to the successful implementation of those national programs. Social implications: Foreign direct investment has a positive impact on the economic development of a country through knowledge spillovers. Therefore, any administrative reform to make local government practices more efficient can have an indirect impact on development. Originality/value: Principal component analysis is a statistical tool that can be important in building good measures of institutional quality by allowing the combination of different observable characteristics into one component that can be interpreted as an operational restriction. The count model allows the use of the primary, easily observable, dependent variable, namely, the number of outlets. Finally, the two-part model makes it possible to discern the effect of institutional quality on the presence or absence of outlets and the number of outlets if these are present. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.14 2
