Abstract
This thesis, "DE LA CIVITAS ROMANA AL ESTADO MEXICANO CONTEMPORÁNEO: UN ANÁLISIS DESDE LA ÓPTICA DEMOCRÁTICA" , employs a historical, analytical, and comparative methodology to trace the evolution of political organization from the Roman Civitas to the contemporary Mexican State, analyzing the cyclical nature of democratic institutions. The study first examines the governance structures of Rome through its Monarchy, Republic, and Empire, focusing on the rise and subsequent decay of its democratic institutions, such as the popular assemblies and the Senate. It then charts the development of modern political thought, constitutionalism, and the concept of the sovereign State through pivotal eras like the Middle Ages , the Peace of Westphalia , and the French and American Revolutions. Finally, this framework is applied to Mexico, analyzing its formation as a Federal Republic and assessing its current democratic health , concluding that modern Mexico faces significant obstacles—including high abstention , excessive centralism , and a dominant presidency —that parallel the institutional dysfunctions and decay that ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Republic.
