La industria de la hospitalidad y su relación con el cuidado de las personas mayores.

¿Adultos mayores? ¿Personas de la tercera edad? ¿Ancianos? No importa como se les llame, sino como se les trata. En las civilizaciones antiguas las personas mayores eran reconocidas y tratadas con gran respeto, al tiempo que jugaban un papel muy importante en la toma de decisiones y en la sociedad misma. Desafortunadamente la sociedad actual ha modificado muchas de sus estructuras, creencias y prácticas, entre ellas el aprecio por las personas mayores quienes lejos de ser una fuente de conocimiento y enriquecimiento se han convertido en una «carga» para la familia. La necesidad de familiares que cuiden de una persona mayor está incrementando día con día y la sociedad no está siendo capaz de cumplir con este requisito, ya que mientras la población mayor a los 65 años incrementa en un 2.3% anual, el número de familiares disponibles para cuidarles solo crece en un 0.8 %. Lo anterior nos hace pensar de inmediato en la hospitalidad. No importa dónde se encuentre la persona mayor: en su casa, en casa de un familiar, en un asilo o residencia para la tercera edad, se le debe tratar con respeto y generar un ambiente propicio para su bienestar.
