Abstract
In near-eye displays such as AR/VR, users often utilize gesture recognition to selectively zoom into regions of interest for detailed observation of local scenes. If the scene is reconstructed from a hologram, zooming in on the scene requires scaling the original hologram. However, scaling a hologram inevitably leads to depth distortion, which causes the reconstructed scene to shift from its original focal plane. A brute-force solution is to re-calculate the hologram from the scaled raw data (e.g. RGB-D data), but this is computationally prohibitive for the real-time interactive scaling expected in near-eye displays. In this paper, we propose a concise and efficient second-pass propagation method. Based on the theoretical relationship between the scaling ratio and depth distortion, the proposed method restores the scaled hologram to its original depth, enabling depth-preserved scaling display. Since the compensation is performed directly on existing holograms without requiring full re-calculation, this method is computationally lightweight and ideally suited for the demands of real-time interaction. Both simulations and optical experiments were conducted on holograms generated by various algorithms. The results confirm the inherent issues of conventional hologram scaling and verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. © 2026 The Author(s). Published by IOP Publishing Ltd.
