Abstract
To evaluate the usability of a mathematics learning resource for secondary school students with visual impairments, this study presents an evaluation of a proposal based on improvements in accessibility features and interface design. We conducted two studies. The first was exploratory to understand the school context and the activities currently implemented for teaching. We interviewed seven teachers and seven students with visual impairments, and mathematics was the primary focus. In the second study, a mathematics application was evaluated using task analysis to identify potential challenges for users. Accessibility and usability were assessed using the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire and the Single Usability Metric (SUM). Based on the results obtained, two prototypes were developed and evaluated using the findings from the pretests as design criteria. The results indicate improvements in outcomes, increasing the usability metric by 31.4% and accessibility metric by 32%. Satisfaction and completion rates increased, and errors and time decreased. The sample size does not allow for statistical significance of the differences. Although the results were favorable, there is a need for tools that allow for design and testing with diverse users from an earlier stage in the design process to achieve inclusion. © 2027 selection and editorial matter, Aide Aracely Maldonado-Macías, Yordán Rodríguez and Juan Luis Hernández Arellano; individual chapters, the contributors.
