Abstract
Social representations have a significant influence on the cognitive process of a society through opinions, experiences, and assumptions; they are vital aspects in the construction of the collective imaginary on the understanding of social phenomena and how these influence the tourist development of the destination. In this way, the conditions of violence and insecurity due to drug trafficking that have prevailed in the State of Sinaloa for a decade, have impacted on this development, giving rise to the formation of the collective imagination based on such aspects as the consumption of narco-culture (music, drug cartel TV shows broadcasted on online platforms, bulletins from U.S. authorities and the media). The analysis of the construction of social representations is done through local, national, and international samples, which have been obtained through interviews with different social actors, inside and outside the country. This research is supported by the theoretical scaffolding on collective imaginaries and the specialized literature on violence and narcoculture of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa. This is an exploratory study, which presents the imact of social representations regarding a phenomenon such as drug trafficking, and its cultural variants in a flexible and dynamic activity, as tourism.
