Abstract
The epistolary dispute between Alberto Pio, Prince of Carpi, and the Netherlander Erasmus of Rotterdam, which took place between 1525 and 1531 in the Reformation context, led to the mediation of the Spaniard Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. Following the demise that the Italian took on the erasmian positions, Ginés authored the Antiapologia with the objective of mediating between the opinions of the Prince and those of Erasmus. The focal point of this research is centering on three key domains: the evolution and selection of the best Latin style, the interpretation of classical educational materials, both Greek, Latin and Patristic, and the nurturing of a pious Christian cosmovision. The initial Albertine vision, which had been adapted to tradition, liturgy and institutionality, was juxtaposed with the erasmian one, which was more innovative, individualistic, and religiously intimate. The assessment of both positions resulted as the sepulvedian judgement of both, which accepted the erasmian innovation, but attending to catholic orthodoxy. It is concluded that there are three joint considerations that Gines puts together from both discussing humanists: Latin style, piety, and classical and patristical contents. Beyond the analyzed texts, it is relevant to highlight the dialogue between tradition and modernity. © The authors (2026), (Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED)). All rights reserved.
