Abstract

Because of their location and biological behavior, clivus chordomas are tumors that remain a major challenge for the neurosurgeon. Clivus chordoma is a slow-growing malignant tumor that originates in the remnants of the notochord and represents 1% of all intracranial tumors. These tumors can be found at the skull base as well as the spine, with a special predilection for the sacrococcygeal and clival regions. Even though the notochord induces the formation of the axial skeleton, clivus chordomas are not necessarily found in the middle line; remnants of this embryological structure have been found at virtually any location of the skull base.
