Item type:Publication, Generative artificial intelligence and university libraries in Latin America(SAGE Publications, 2025-07-15); ;César Saavedra-Alamillas ;Josmel Pacheco-MendozaJuan D Machin-Mastromatteo
This article explores the use of generative artificial intelligence in Latin American university libraries, discussing both its potential benefits and challenges. It emphasizes how generative artificial intelligence, which is capable of generating text, video, images, music, and code, is revolutionizing library operations by automating tasks and enhancing research and reference services. The research involved a literature review and interviews with library directors from six prominent universities, revealing varied levels of generative artificial intelligence adoption, from experimental to fully integrated within institutional frameworks. The challenges include staff resistance, training deficiencies, and technological constraints. The study is optimistic about the future of generative artificial intelligence in academic libraries, recommending ongoing training and clear policy development for its successful and ethical implementation. Major service providers like EBSCO, Clarivate, and Elsevier are also noted for their role in supporting this digital transition.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Creating Onomastic Social Network Maps of Books Using Their Indexes. Case Study: ‘Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World’(Wiley, 2025) ;Repiso, Rafael ;Ortiz-Díaz, Erik M; This paper proposes a methodology to create social networks using subject and onomastic indexes from books to facilitate content analysis in monographic works. Books have not been largely studied in this context because their contents have not been digitized as in comparison with scientific research articles. However, indexes have been proven as a useful tool to identify relations between terms or characters mentioned inside the texts. This technique is based in the co-presence among these elements and they further visualization, offering a new perspective for structural analysis within Social Sciences and Humanities books. The book ‘Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World’ has been used as a study object to illustrate this technique and its possibilities. ©The authors ©Learned Publishing ©Wiley. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Technological scenarios for the new normality in Latin American academic libraries(2022) ;Lourdes Feria Basurto;
The technological scenarios that have arisen in Latin American universities have been substantially changing in recent months as a result of the international health emergency caused by COVID-19. The lockdown policy revealed the need to develop digital and informational skills to adapt to the environment and the demands of distance learning required for integral online education. In order to observe and systematize the transformation of the technological environment in academic libraries during these months, the recent situation was identified based on data analysis obtained from a questionnaire applied in Latin American countries. The results reported significant changes in the use of digital applications, services, user assistance and librarian training during the pandemic, as well as the libraries’ mid-term commitments.
Scopus© Citations 2 39 1
