The RC4 cryptographic algorithm is the most extensively studied stream cipher of the past two decades. This extensive research has resulted in numerous publications, many of which identify various vulnerabilities. Although these vulnerabilities do not preclude the correct use of the algorithm, they complicate its practical implementation. In this paper, we present a novel weakness in the RC4 cipher. Our findings indicate that, for input keys exhibiting certain patterns, the parity of the values in the output permutation of the KSA can be determined with high probability from the parity of its position in the output permutation. Furthermore, the use of keys with these specific patterns leads to noticeable distortions in several bytes of the RC4 output.

This paper proposes two new methods of key space partitioning for the cryptanalysis of block ciphers. The first one is called combined methodology of key space partition (CoMeKSPar), which allows us to simultaneously set some of the first and last consecutive bits of the key. In this way, the search is performed using the remaining middle bits. CoMeKSPar is a combination of two methods already proposed in the scientific literature, the Borges, Borges, Monier (BBM) and the Tito, Borges, Borges (TBB). The second method is called the general algorithm of key space reduction (GAKSRed), which makes it possible to perform a genetic algorithm search in the space formed by the unknown bits of the key, regardless of their distribution in the binary block. Furthermore, a method of attacking block ciphers is presented for the case where some key bits are known; the basic idea is to deduce some of the remaining bits of the block. An advantage of these methods is that they allow parallel computing, which allows simultaneous searches in different sub-blocks of key bits, thereby increasing the probability of success. The experiments are performed with the KLEIN (Small) lightweight block cipher using the genetic algorithm.

The growing demand for organic products is having a transformative effect on the alcoholic beverage industry. This work investigates the possibility of producing organic ethanol only from sugarcane final molasses as a nutrient vector and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the absence of inorganic nitrogen or phosphorus compounds. The Plackett–Bürman design included the pseudo-factors (X4–X6) due to the experimental design requirements. These factors represent the possible influence of uncontrolled variables, such as pH or nutrient interactions. Subsequently, a predictive quadratic model using Box–Behnken design with the real variables (sugar concentration, yeast dose, and incubation time) was developed and validated (R2=0.977) with internal validation; given the lack of replications and the sample size, this value should be interpreted with caution and not as generalizable predictive evidence. Further experiments with replications and cross-validation will be required to confirm its predictive capacity. Through statistical optimization, the maximum cell proliferation of 432×106 cells/mL was achieved under optimal conditions of 8°Brix sugar concentration, 20 g/L dry yeast, and 3 h incubation time. The optimized fermentation process produced 7.8% v/v ethanol with a theoretical fermentation efficiency of 78.52%, an alcohol-to-substrate yield of 62.15%, and a productivity of 1.86 g/L·h, representing significant improvements of 21.9%, 24.6%, 31.0%, and 10.1%, respectively, compared with non-optimized conditions. The fermentation time was reduced from 48 to 42 h while maintaining superior performance. These results demonstrate the technical feasibility of producing organic ethanol using certified organic molasses and no chemical additives. Overall, these findings should be regarded as proof of concept. All experiments were single-run without biological or technical replicates; consequently, the optimization and models are preliminary and require confirmation with replicated experiments and external validation.

A New Family of Boolean Functions with Good Cryptographic Properties

In 2005, Philippe Guillot presented a new construction of Boolean functions using linear codes as an extension of the Maiorana–McFarland’s (MM) construction of bent functions. In this paper, we study a new family of Boolean functions with cryptographically strong properties, such as non-linearity, propagation criterion, resiliency, and balance. The construction of cryptographically strong Boolean functions is a daunting task, and there is currently a wide range of algebraic techniques and heuristics for constructing such functions; however, these methods can be complex, computationally difficult to implement, and not always produce a sufficient variety of functions. We present in this paper a construction of Boolean functions using algebraic codes following Guillot’s work.

Entropy makes it possible to measure the uncertainty about an information source from the distribution of its output symbols. It is known that the maximum Shannon’s entropy of a discrete source of information is reached when its symbols follow a Uniform distribution. In cryptography, these sources have great applications since they allow for the highest security standards to be reached. In this work, the most effective estimator is selected to estimate entropy in short samples of bytes and bits with maximum entropy. For this, 18 estimators were compared. Results concerning the comparisons published in the literature between these estimators are discussed. The most suitable estimator is determined experimentally, based on its bias, the mean square error short samples of bytes and bits.

Structural Equation Modeling for Analyzing Pro-Environmental Behavior in Switzerland
Using data from Round 11 of the European Social Survey, covering Switzerland, this article employs Structural Equation Modeling to investigate the associations between psychosocial factors and pro-environmental behavior. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, which integrates subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and attitudes to predict behavioral intentions and actual pro-environmental behaviors. The findings reveal that perceived social norms are strong predictors of pro-environmental behavioral intentions, illustrating the power of expectations from other people on the propensity to act sustainably. However, the effects of attitudes toward the environment and perceived behavioral control on behavioral intention were minimal or unobserved. It indicates that respondents may support environmental and sustainability issues, but this is often not matched by strong intentions to act. Additionally, the perceived control over pro-environmental behavior does not directly affect actual behavior. This suggests that external barriers may prevent individuals from performing sustainable behavior, even if they are motivated. The measurement invariance across gender groups was also examined in the study, which is essential to confirm the equivalence of measurements, and observed differences in latent variables could not be an artifact due to potential measurement bias. The findings suggest that subjective norms and pro-environmental behaviors are more likely to be higher among women, while men scored higher on perceived control. This indicates that women internalize social expectations stronger than men do to act, but for men, they feel able to act, but this confidence does not imply action. This research focuses on the significance of social influences in ecologically friendly action and on the discrepancies between intention and behavior. This study adds to our understanding of the determinants of pro-environmental behavior, providing relevant insights for policymakers to inform more effective interventions that close the gap between awareness and action.

Detection of DIAG and LINE Patterns in PassPoints Graphical Passwords Based on the Maximum Angles of Their Delaunay Triangles

An alternative authentication method to traditional alphanumeric passwords is graphical password authentication, also known as graphical authentication, for which one of the most valuable cued-recall techniques is PassPoints. This technique stands out for its security and usability. However, it can be violated if the user follows a predefined pattern when selecting the five points in an image as their passwords, such as the DIAG and LINE patterns. Dictionary attacks can be built using these two patterns to compromise graphical passwords. So far, no reports have been found in the state of the art about any test capable of detecting graphical passwords with DIAG or LINE patterns in PassPoints. Studies carried out in other scenarios have shown the effectiveness of the characteristics of Delaunay triangulations in extracting information about the dependence between the points. In this work, graphical passwords formed by five randomly selected points on an image are compared with passwords whose points contain patterns of the DIAG or LINE type. The comparison is based on building for each password its Delaunay triangulation and calculating the mean value of the maximum angles of the triangles obtained; such a mean value is denoted by amadt. It is experimentally shown that in passwords containing DIAG and LINE patterns, the value of amadt is higher than the one obtained in passwords formed by random dots. From this result, it is proposed to use this amadt value as a statistic to build a test of means. This result constitutes the work’s main contribution: The proposal of a spatial randomness test to detect weak graphic passwords that contain DIAG and LINE type patterns. The importance and novelty of this result become evident when two aspects are taken into account: First, these weak passwords can be exploited by attackers to improve the effectiveness of their attacks; second, there are no prior criteria to detect this type of weak password. The practical application of said test contributes to increasing PassPoints security without substantially affecting its efficiency.
