    Framing the 'Clash of Civilization' in Europe: Interaction between Political and Media Frames

    The present study reviews the foci, symbols and interpretations that the European media use to formulate and spread the political message about the “clash of civilizations”. This means observing how this cultural clash is articulated in political discourse and how this is then reflected in the leading European media. To carry out this study, we compared the frames found in several significant political discourses (Bush, Ahmadinejad, Sarkozy, Gül) and those encountered in the coverage of these same discourses in the following European newspapers: The Guardian, Le Monde, Frankfürter Allemaigne. Through this specific case, the research also explores what is the process of the frame elaboration and which conditions make political discourse more effective and attractive for the media to assimilate them. ©The authors ©Journal Media and Communication Studies.     El artículo sostiene que sólo en el campo de la deliberación existe la intencionalidad en el sentido de una clase de previsión y planeación, memoria e imaginación que sale al tiempo y el espacio. Además, sólo en la esfera de la deliberación puede existir algo como la normatividad, ya sea en un sentido lógico, moral o legal. Sólo aquellos que pueden deliberar tienen alguna razón para creer lo que creen y desear lo que desean. Siguiendo estas indicaciones, un análisis de las determinaciones e indeterminaciones del proceso de deliberación conduce a una comprensión revisada del compatibilismo de la libertad humana.

    Do free minds exist? Commentary to “The Ability to Deliberate” by MartinSeel

    El autor explora algunas consecuencias inesperadas del artículo de Martin Seel. Para ello, reconstruye, a partir del texto de Seel, un argumento sobre la existencia de las mentes libres. La reconstrucción es en cierto sentido extravagante y fuertemente separada del texto de Seel, tomando como modelo el argumento sobre el mundo exterior de Moore (I). Después se considera brevemente ambos argumentos (II), para luego tomar de nuevo los conceptos de deliberación y razón usados por Seel (III). Por último, Pereda se pregunta en qué sentido pueden ser defendidos los argumentos de Seel y Moore (IV) y qué consecuencias tendría hacerlo.

    En este artículo hago comentarios a varios aspectos del artículo de Martin Seel, “The Ability to Deliberate”, principalmente en sus afirmaciones de que la deliberación es una forma de acción, en su no muy clara distinción entre deliberación y pensamiento, y en la relación entre normatividad y deliberación. Hay también algunos comentarios sobre el razonamiento práctico y el teórico, así como en su caracterización de lo que son las razones.

    Using low conversion bulk copolymerization experimental data and the apparent rate constant model, the monomer chain cross‐transfer rate constants and the cross‐termination coefficient were evaluated. It was found that the dependence of the cross‐termination coefficient on composition is a function of initiator efficiency and that monomer chain cross‐transfer rate constant are relevant for the theoretical estimation of the molecular weights and molecular weight distributions.

    A new paradigm in solid waste collection systems design and operation

    A new solid waste collection model, called MST, has been developed. It is a result of combining System Thinking and Aggregation Theory and it takes into account real world constraints such as collection frequency, labor shifts and both preventive and corrective maintenance. MST is a paradigm shift in solid waste collection systems design and operation. It makes possible a more efficient utilization of resources (vehicles and labor) and it is robust against variability sources. MST is the result of having challenged and invalidated a deeply rooted assumption in all models developed up to date. Simulation and Design Of Experiments were used to compare MST against existing models. Experimental resultsshow significant reduction in the number of trips(Up to 33%), crews(Up to 49%) and vehicles (Up to 40%), which means dramatic operation cost and investment improvements. ©International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS).
