Studies on quality, always mention that in order to do things right, they must be done in a clean and orderly way. Japan has a recipe for achieving clean spaces, improve order and increase productivity in their factories, called the 5's. This concept should not seem strange today for any organization, unfortunately it is. This philosophy began in Toyota in the 60s. The goal was to improve productivity by achieving a better workplace; the means were well organized work places, more orderly and cleaner. The method's effectiveness was proven and has been adopted in offices, shops, hospitals, schools and other places as a way to increase the efficiency with very good results, especially in terms of saving time and costs.

Cleaning is an inherently human activity; any space inhabited or used as a workplace must devise the best way to keep it clean and tidy. However, cleaning is different from one place to another. In the case of hospitals, this activity becomes very important because there are more resistant microorganisms in clinics, and patients usually have diminished defenses. Cleanliness in hospitals therefore requires professional staff that have specific knowledge about how to combat nosocomial infections and thus develop an effective hygiene. Supplying patients with a safe environment requires a commitment to the policy recommendations about hand hygiene, and proper cleaning and disinfection of medical equipment and surfaces. Cleaning, disinfection and sterilization saves lives and improves patient outcomes.

Daily cleaning is a necessary chore in order to maintain the original characteristics and functionality of materials. However it is important to think of a different way of doing it, taking into consideration the health of every person involved. It is convenient to be informed on what is implied in Green Cleaning techniques. One must take into consideration naturally made, non-toxic, biodegradable chemical products as well as technological advances in utensils and cleaning equipment. This new trend is a new way of filth elimination, the advantages and benefits of which we will be hearing more and more about. The Green Cleaning program is composed of various elements, which will be briefly mentioned along with the steps for its implementation.
