Abstract
Throughout time man has learned to make the most of nature'sresources to meet his needs. The environment is experiencing an alteration as a result of the effects and processes of these human activities. Some of these are, water pollution, greenhouse gasemissionsand excessive use of nonrenewable resources. This compels us to find viable solutions to make the most of natural energy resources minimizing environmental impact. This new life style is called sustainable development, which is increasingly demanded by conscious consumers concerned about the environment. The recommendations are: renewable resources should not be used at a higher rate than what it takes for their generation, while non-renewable resources should be used with care until they can be replaced by renewable resources. Sustainable policies apply to four different dimensions in order to improve global impact, these are: a) Economic, b) Ecological, c) Social d) Physical-biological. Daily operations of any institution negatively impact the environment because of their activities: tourism, food and beverage, lodging and health care. Sustainable development must be implemented in all institutions, and service institutions are not the exception; therefore, they must consider actions that require a practical plan to balance ecological, social and economic practices. It is important to emphasize the importance of innocuousness in service institutions since providing safecustomer services is critical, it must be done through the adoption of sustainable techniques and methods which avoid contamination. If it want to be socially responsible, a company must work sustainably.
