Abstract
The theory of endogenous development plays a fundamental role in the progress of rural communities since it is subscribed as an option to energize marginalized populations through lo-cal initiatives that involve a change in the productive activities that, on many occasions, manage to integrate the tertiary or service sector. Due to the expectations that tourism activity directly generates, especially in rural communities with dis-tinctive identity features, such activity means the exploitation of their cultural and natural heritage as a means to diversify their economy, create new jobs, and, therefore, a significant development opportunity. This work aims to elaborate a re-view of the specialized literature based on the Web of Sciencedatabase regarding the local development endogenous con-cept and to identify how this concept integrates the tourist activity in its approach. Twenty-six articles were identified that include this concept, and only three of them add tourism directly. The main conclusion is that researchers admit the existence of a partnership between local endogenous deve-lopment and tourism, mainly community-based tourism, by integrating this activity as a strategy for innovation and pro-ductive diversification
