Abstract
Cristóbal de Cabrera, secretario de Vasco de Quiroga, compiló uno de los primeros testimonios sobre la propuesta educativa de los pueblos-hospital en la Nueva España. La versión de Cabrera ha sido poco explorada en los vastos estudios sobre Quiroga. Por ello, el objetivo de este artículo es mostrar los momentos configuradores del pueblo-hospital, ubicado en Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacán, en tres documentos puntuales: el primero, Carta al conde de Osorno (1531), el segundo, Reglas y ordenanzas de un pueblo-hospital (ca. 1547), ambos de Vasco y, el tercero, De solicitanda infidelium conversione (1582), de Cabrera, para lo cual se contextuó el territorio michoacano antes de y con la llegada de los españoles. Posteriormente, se explicó la llegada de Vasco y Cabrera con la segunda Audiencia de la Nueva España. Finalmente, se trazó el desarrollo de los tres momentos del proyecto quiroguiano, hecho realidad en la evangelización, la técnica del oficio y la vida civil bajo nuevos referentes. Se concluye que, el pueblo-hospital, fue una institución pacificadora del territorio y enmendadora de la primera Audiencia contra el pueblo purépecha. Para futuros estudios, convendría contrastar esta perspectiva con la de otros testigos de aquellos tres momentos referidos. ©Los autores ©Universidad Católica Luis Amigo.
Cristóbal de Cabrera, secretary of Vasco de Quiroga, compiled one of the first testimonials about the educational proposal in the pueblo-hospital settlements in the New Spain. Cabrera’s perspective has been less studied among the large Quiroga’s researches. Because of this, the aim of this paper is to show the configuring moments of the pueblo-hospital, in Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacán, in three different documents: 1. Carta al conde de Osorno (1531), 2. Reglas y ordenanzas de un pueblo-hospital (ca. 1547), both by Vasco, and 3. Cabrera ‘s De solicitanda infidelium conversione (1582). Firstly, the Michoacán territory was contextualized, before and after the Conquest. Secondly, it is explained the arrival of Quiroga and Cabrera with the Second Audiencia of the New Spain. Finally, the development of the three moments of Quiroga’s project is sketched, as brought to reality with the evangelization, the techniques of craft, and the civil life under new referents. It is concluded that the pueblo-hospital was a territory pacifying institution and mending of the Primer Audiencia against the purépecha people. For future studies it would be advisable to contrast this perspective with that of other witnesses of those three referred moments. ©The authors ©Universidad Católica Luis Amigo.
