Abstract
This paper examines the problem of normativity and ethical grounding in Aristotle through a close analysis of the ergon argument in Nicomachean Ethics I.7. After reconstructing the structure of the argument, it distinguishes two broad interpretative models: a foundationalist reading, which grounds ethics in Aristotle's speculative philosophy, and a minimalist or non-foundationalist reading, which understands the argument as ethically self-standing. The paper argues that the ergon argument admits both interpretations but defends the minimalist approach as textually and methodologically preferable. On this view, the normative force of the argument does not derive from metaphysical premises but from its role within ethical inquiry itself. This interpretation aligns with Aristotle's methodological remarks and preserves the practical orientation of his ethical project. © The author. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Daniel Doyle Sánchez and Manuel C.
