Abstract
In Mexico the hotel sector has about 600,000 rooms distributed in some 16,000 establishments which in 2008 attended 60,000,000 lodgers. To operate it uses resources such as water, electricity, paper, beverages, foodstuff, cleaning implements both personal and industrial and give off solid, liquid and gaseous contaminating residues, which of not properly handled to diminish repercussions on the environment, may generate all kinds of problems in the areas where they are installed. Different studies have proved that each establishment responds differently to solve the ecological impact. The main object of this paper is to present the various theories which explain this type of environmental behavior on behalf of hotels, as well as the areas of opportunity in their policies.
