Item type:Publication, Digital health literacy is linked to attitudes regarding the ethical aspects of digital health among patients with dermatologic comorbidities(Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2025) ;Ruelas-Villavicencio, Ana Lilia ;Contreras-Yáñez, Irazú ;Gómez-Ruiz, Roxana Paola ;Zagaglia Del Valle, María ClaraMalagón-Liceaga, AndreaIntroduction: Digital health literacy (DHL), also known as eHealth literacy, refers to an individual’s ability to locate, understand, evaluate, and apply health information from electronic sources to make informed health decisions. This skill is increasingly regarded as essential for navigating the modern healthcare landscape, promoting health equity, and improving health outcomes. The study objective was to establish an association between DHL and dermatologic outpatients’ attitudes regarding ethical aspects of digital health. Additionally, we validated a questionnaire designed to assess these bioethical attitudes. Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in two phases (April 2024-December 2024). Phase-1 consisted of validating the Bioethical Attitudes toward Digital Health questionnaire (BADH). Phase-2 evaluated the association between the eHEALS (it assesses a person’s ability to use digital health resources) and BADH scores. Three convenience samples of consecutive patients were used: S-1 included 46 patients who participated in a pilot testing, S-2 included 100 patients who participated in the BADH validation and S-3 included 120 patients and was used to investigate the association between DHL and bioethical attitudes. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Results: The 8-item BADH was found to be feasible, valid, and reliable. The exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure, consisting of trust and privacy dimensions, which accounted for 59.8% of the total variance. This structure was subsequently validated through confirmatory factor analysis. The BADH reliability was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.686 and ICC of 0.684 (95% CI: 0.581–0.770). A positive linear association was identified between the eHEALS and the BADH scores (β = 0.465, 95%CI: 0.218–0.450, p < 0.001). This relationship was evident with the trust dimension of the BADH (β = 0.526, 95%CI: 0.206–0.379, p < 0.001), but not with the privacy dimension. Conclusions: DHL is associated with individual moral positions regarding digital health, particularly those concerning trust. The BADH questionnaire has adequate psychometric properties. ©The authors ©Public Library of Science (PLoS) ©PLOS one. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
©Universidad de Chile, Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios en Bioética32 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Perceptions of COVID-19 patients in the use of bioethical principles and the physician-patient relationship: a qualitative approach(BioMed Central Ltd, 2024); ;Gómez-Guerrero, Irma Eloisa ;Aguiñaga-Chiñas, Nuria ;López Cervantes, MarianaJaramillo Flores, Ignacio DavidThe COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the approach to the health-disease system, raising the question about the principles of bioethics present in physician–patient relations. The principles while widely accepted may not be sufficient for a comprehensive ethical analysis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the perception of these principles and the physician–patient relationship during a hospital stay through a qualitative approach. Method: Sixteen semi-structured interviews took place to know the patients’ perception during their 2020 hospitalization for COVID-19. The data was analyzed through the constant comparison method, creating categories and comparing them. In the end, seven categories were established and were grouped in three: bioethical principles (dignity, charity, vulnerability, autonomy), doctor-patient relationship (participant commitment, informed consent, health staff-patient relationship) and the experience of the disease (illness, the role of the family). Results: The research found that most patients described a positive experience, with the feeling of having been well cared for with no sense of discrimination or injustice done. The majority also reported that their autonomy was respected in the treatment decisions. The evaluation of these attitudes is an area of opportunity, especially when the patients' vulnerability is at risk. Conclusions: The ethics of virtue offers a better reflection of how human beings manifest themselves by emphasizing the development of virtuous character and behaviors that allow them to realize their values in life. Item type:Publication, Dilemas bioéticos y sus posibles soluciones en las unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica del Distrito Federal (México)(Universidad de Chile, Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios en Bioética, 2013)Caballero Velarde, María CristinaThe process of decision making in pediatric intensive therapy units (PITU) is based on an ethical, legal and scientific framework, which generally is more complex that with adults and involves parents or tutors, thus, it must be solved carefully, with time and methodological precision. A survey was design for experts with anonymous and voluntary application, in a non institutional way, in which questions arise referring to bioethical dilemmas generated in PITU services and proceedings for their solution are proposed. Delphi method was used as instrument in two rounds. The most important results, among others, consisted in recognizing that all physician surveyed face in their unit ethical dilemmas, the most frequent being obstinacy in therapy in 32% cases, result linked to the difficulty to establish the diagnosis of terminal patient in 13% cases. To include bioethics topics and decision making with moral content in training professionals, as well as implementing assertive communication among health care team and families, and promoting adequate functioning of hospital bioethics committees with emergency consulting functions, are proposals which arise from the conclusions of this study.Scopus© Citations 2 18 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, COVID-19 and Fontan: bioethical analysis derived from the need for hospital reconversion(2022) ;Gómezchico-Velasco, Rebeca; ;Salazar-Lizárraga, David ;Yáñez-Gutiérrez, LucelliMárquez-González, HoracioBackground: Among congenital heart diseases, those with univentricular physiology are the most severe with the lowest survival. Fontan surgery (FS) is the procedure of choice, as it bypasses the flow from the caval veins to the pulmonary circulation but requires close monitoring for late complications. The SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic caused nations to prioritize the availability of human and material health resources to benefit those infected. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical consequences of hospital reconversion due to the COVID-19 pandemic in a univentricular heart clinic for patients with FS from the bioethical perspective. Methods: We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study in a captive cohort of patients with FS treated in a tertiary hospital with conversion to COVID-19 patient care. The consequences of discontinuation of follow-up were recorded. Qualitative variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages, and quantitative variables as medians and interquartile ranges (p25-p75). Comparison between the two groups was performed with the χ2 test. ©Boletín Médico del Hospital Infantil de MéxicoScopus© Citations 1 16 2
