This article aims to analyze the concepts of hospitality and social well-being in light of the impact that tourism development has on a population’s social growth. The concept of hospitality is incorporated into a philosophical and anthropological approach, and draws on concepts of well-being from social and economic perspectives. We offer a comparative analysis of regional tourism growth and its impact on a local population’s well-being based on the four variables associated with economic development: Food (as included within the healthcare field), Education, Social Security and Housing. We examine the impact tourism has had on social growth in populations from Baja California Sur, Mexico, specifically focusing on the municipalities of Comondú, Mulegé, La Paz, Los Cabos and Loreto. We begin with the premise that development measures do not always coincide with qualitative improvement, and often just include quantitative improvement, when it comes to the local population and its environment because tourism growth is based on an outdated concept limited to economic data. We have found that, although authorities have worked to promote tourism for decades, many of the needs of the poor and working class have gone unattended, reflecting the government’s long-term abandonment in this area.

Charity is the master path of the social doctrine of the Church, as all the responsibilities and commitments conceived by this doctrine come from the charity, according to the teachings of Jesus. By its close relationship with the truth, charity can be recognized as an authentic expression of humanity and as an element of essential importance in human relations, as well as in those of public nature. The encyclical Caritas in veritate is a teaching for Christians, as for anyone who needs clear reasoning to understand the concept of the human sense of development and peace in the current times of economic crisis.

The comparison with other countries that have different economic development levels make see Mexico as an attractive country which climbs the world rankings in both indicators. The composition of the tourist activities in Mexico as well as the participation of each of them in the tourism GDP show a constant growth trend which favors employment generation in this sector with a share of 8.3% of the total number of people employed nationwide. La economía creativa, una fuente creciente de desarrollo
    (Hospitalidad ESDAI, 2015)

In this changing and complex world in where we happened to live in, the problems we deal with as a society become difficult challenges, which lead us to propose solutions in a different way, with different resources with regard to what until now has been done; the search for solutions with creativity through new ideas allows -among other things- the exploitation of intangible resources towards a development, which results in a better standard of living. "[...] The complexity, unpredictability and the pace of events in our world, as well as the hardness of global environmental stress, are shooting up. If our societies desire to manage their resources and improve their well-being, they will need more ingenuity, that is, more ideas to solve their problems" (Homer-Dixon, 2012). The economic and social activity in the countries has been modified so that most of the traditional industries are incorporating the values of design and creativity to its products to differentiate themselves from the competition products, in such a way that the intangible aspects of creative thinking, have become fundamental elements for the provision of goods and services. Culture as a fundamental part of intangible assets of a company, is becoming in one more of those elements, within the economic activity generated by a country, subject to the rules of the market, in what has been called the field of creative industries that are aimed at achieving their development.

These indicators provide more and better elements for decision making regarding pricing, forecasting, knowledge of the competition, geographic and non-geographic hierarchy, benchmarking and understanding and interpreting the required reports of relevant sector information. The above mentioned factors allow determining that measurement for better decision making is not based on subjective factors, or due to a specific location, but due to objective measurable factors, which help to achieve better results in the establishment of rates, policies, special offers and predictions that help to better the position of hotels within tourist industry.

This paper intends to discuss the concern both in national and international environments about job creation and the perspective of discouraging scenarios for young graduates who are willing to find where to apply the knowledge acquired during their academic life, trying to convert it into a better standard of living and that, however, it is complex to achieve as a result of the current economical situation. The graduates of ESDAI are no exception to the above scenario; however, it is important to note that through the profile obtained in the course of their degree, and the philosophy of life of the institution, which is characterized by hospitality, differ from other related academic degrees. Thus, despite the latest crisis that has beaten all productive activity, the hospitality industry, which resides in the services sector, shows a degree of stability for which the ESDAI student becomes a competitive advantage that turns into an economic growth.
