    Cause and Explanation in Aristotle: Logos, Eidos, and Tropos
    (Routledge, 2023-01-01)
    The aim of this chapter is to propose a reconstruction of the Aristotelian notion of aitia. I will attempt to justify that, through this notion, Aristotle proposes a doctrine regarding the different ways to explain something, which is not necessarily linked to a specific cosmology. If we read closely his exposition about what is an aitia and the classifications according to their eidos and their tropos, we find a fruitful theory both from a historical and from a thematic point of view. This can be justified by identifying the methodological moment in which its exposition is found and in the kind of examples used. To prove this thesis, I will comment some passages of Ph. II 3 and Metaph. V 1–3 in order to show what is common between species and modes of aitiai. After that, I will analyze these classifications and attempt to show that they provide us with a wide variety of options to answer the question about why something is the case. I will also try to prove that they are not necessarily linked to a specific physics or cosmology. ©Routledge

    La defensa aristotélica del uso de explicaciones teleológicas en Física II 8
    (Universidad Panamericana. Facultad de Filosofía, 2006) ;
    JOSE ALBERTO ROSS HERNANDEZ;39061
    Este ensayo intenta ofrecer una reconstrucción de los argumentos de Aristóteles del uso de explicaciones teleológicas en Física II 8. En su exposición de los pasajes seleccionados Ross pone cierto énfasis en el carácter dialógico del discurso para hacer una modesta contribución a la solución de dos acertijos: uno de carácter exegético, y el otro sistemático. Esta lectura permite al autor introducir un nuevo elemento en la discusión concerniente a qué alcances y límites hay de las explicaciones teleológicas en la Física de Aristóteles. En opinión de Ross, esta estrategia es útil para adelantar en la comprensión de cuál es el tipo de argumentos que pueden ofrecerse cuando lo que se está considerando es si la teleología o el mecanicismo son el esquema explicativo más apropiado para dar cuenta de los fenómenos naturales.

    Abstracción y presencia : observaciones sobre los orígenes de la filosofía en Leonardo Polo
    (Universidad de Navarra, 2015)
    El propósito de este trabajo es presentar algunos aspectos de la recepción de la filosofía antigua en Leonardo Polo. En particular, este artículo se centrará en su explicación acerca del origen histórico del pensamiento filosófico. Polo sostiene que si la abstracción es la primera operación intelectual, la filosofía griega es la primera filosofía. En su opinión, su propuesta epistemológica tiene verificación histórica y apela a los filósofos antiguos para probarlo. En este contexto, sus referencias a los pensadores griegos tienen un propósito temático, y no sólo historiográfico. ©2016 Studia Poliana, Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra

    Causality, Nature and Fate in Alexander of Aphrodisias
    The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between "causality", "nature", and "fate" in the De Fato of Alexander of Aphrodisias. The Greek commentator offers several arguments against determinism in the mentioned book, but I will focus my attention on only one of them in order to achieve my purpose. Alexander points out that everything that is "in accordance with nature" (katà tèn phúsin) is also "in accordance with fate" (kath'heimarménen). I will try to clarify this point and I will consider some novel aspects of Alexander's theory which emerge in the reconstruction of his assimilation of Aristotelianism.

    Dios, causalidad y movimiento en la Suma Teológica de santo Tomás de Aquino
    This paper aims to offer a reconstruction of the First Way (Prima Via) proposed by Thomas Aquinas to demonstrate the existence of God in the Summa Theologiae. The Thomist argument in that work explains, first, what kind of rational discourse can be articulated to talk about God’s existence and essence. After he elaborates on the previous point, Aquinas proposes a series of arguments intended to resolve the question of the existence of a divine being and his attributes. In what concerns this present text, we will focus on the first way proposed there in favour of the thesis “God exists” and we will also talk about the discursive context in which this proof appears. Thomas refers to it as the first and clearest proof of them all. © 2022, Editorial Balmes. All rights reserved.

    Reflexión bioética interdisciplinaria en torno a la edición genética con CRISPR-Cas en línea germinal en el contexto del transhumanismo
    The purpose of this article is to explain some of the implications of using the CRISPR-Cas technique in the germinal line for non-therapeutic purposes, in the context of transhumanism. After giving a brief explanation about the nature of this technique, the state of the question is offered in relation to the current international regulations. Afterwards, the consequences of the development of this technique within the framework of the transhumanism project are observed and it offers legal, political and anthropological reflections on these consequences. © 2019 Centro de Investigacion Social Avanzada. Cause and Explanation in Ancient Philosophy
    (Routledge, 2023-01-01) ;
    Vázquez, Daniel
    This volume offers an updated analysis of the use, meaning, and scope of the classical notion of aitia. It clarifies philosophical and philological questions about aitia and offers bold and innovative interpretations of this key concept of ancient philosophy. The numerous meanings and nuances of aitia remain difficult to grasp. Ancient philosophers use aitia to explain the existence and activity of substances, bodies, souls, or gods. Paradoxically, its own definition remains difficult to establish. This book reconstructs some of the most important uses, variants, and scopes of the term aitia within different philosophical perspectives in antiquity, including early Greek philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Stoicism, and Islamic philosophy. The chapters analyze metaphysical aspects, epistemological issues, and logical implications of aitia. They engage with the most relevant critical literature generated in several modern languages. In doing so, they offer an inclusive and overarching re-evaluation of our assumptions about causation and explanation in ancient philosophy. Cause and Explanation in Ancient Philosophy will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Pre-Socratic philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy, late antiquity, and medieval philosophy. ©Routledge.

    Hedoné, teleíosis and enérgeia in Aristotle
    Hedoné, teleíosis and enérgeia in Aristotle · The aim of this paper is to discuss the Aristotelian defnition of pleasure in Nicomachean Ethics x 4. In those passages, Aristotle offers several arguments to prove that pleasure is not a movement (kínesis), or a coming into being. The nature of pleasure would imply a diferent kind of assimilation, something closer to an enérgeia. Even though, it is not clear in those texts, if pleasure is strictly speaking an activity or something that completes it. We fnd passages pointing out in both directions. In any case, a pleasure would complete an activity not as the inherent state does, but as an end which supervenes, just «as the bloom of youth does on those in the fower of their age». I will try to clarify the sense of this metaphor in the framework of Aristotle’s ontology and his ethical account in order to explain the Aristotelian defnition of pleasure.
