    This document is a chapter that discusses the negotiation problem in product commercialisation by small-scale producers in the Mexican agri-food sector, specifically in the coffee industry. The chapter emphasises the importance of developing soft skills, particularly assertiveness, in the different actors of the productive chain for price negotiation and product commercialisation. The article discusses the concepts of agroecology and assertiveness in agri-food value chains and the methodology used to measure the relationship between assertiveness and overpricing of agri-food goods using a logistic model. The study found that assertiveness in management and other skills and knowledge can lead to higher coffee prices and improve producers’ quality of life. The article also discusses the coffee industry’s evolution in terms of economic units, added value, governance, institutional framework and policy initiatives to support the sector. The study’s results could have implications for other agri-food products in Mexico, such as Creole corn, mezcal, tequila and cocoa.©The authors ©Emerald Publishing.

    “I’m OK, You’re OK” Philosophy: Promoting a Culture of Respect, Equity, Justice, and Peace Through Assertiveness—An Introduction
    (Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024)
    Castaños-Cervantes Susana
    ;
    Assertiveness is a human right essential for belonging and cultivating a culture of peace, equity, justice, and respect. Its importance lies in fostering culturally appropriate interactions and in the ability to express clearly, confidently, and respectfully personal needs, opinions, desires, and emotions while considering and respecting the rights and perspectives of others. It is a valuable tool since it contributes to improving, among other aspects, interpersonal relationships, quality of care, work efficiency and productivity, teamwork, psychosocial well-being, and health outcomes. This chapter qualitatively analyses assertiveness as a human right and as the fundamental factor for intercultural competencies, which, in turn, help establish diverse and inclusive societies. As a result, peace, justice, and equity are settled amongst communities, and a culture of belonging, enrichment, and thriving is cultivated. It examines how education paves the way for communicating, behaving assertively, and exercising the human right to be assertive. Thus, education provides the foundation for learning to live together through assertiveness. Finally, this chapter synthesises and analyses the book to give a general overview of its content. This book will pave the way for future research on assertive rights. It will encourage studies of assertiveness as a human right and as a way of promoting a culture of respect, justice, and peace within diverse, inclusive, and culturally competent societies. ©The authors ©Springer.

    The Role of Development and Commercial Banking in Promoting Economic Growth in Mexico: A Sectoral Analysis
    (2024)
    Gil Jordan, Jesús Antonio
    ;
    ;
This study examines the impact of credit extended by both commercial and development banks on exports, GDP, and FDI across different sectors in Mexico. The research lies within the broader context of financial sector development and its role in promoting regional development and economic growth. We use panel data techniques to compare traditional models that include only commercial bank credit with models incorporating development bank credit. Our results emphasize the different and complementary roles of commercial and development banks. The latter is crucial in addressing market failures and supporting long-term, socially and economically beneficial projects. The study concludes that development bank credit should be integrated into economic studies to better understand its contribution to sustainable growth. It suggests that policymakers should coordinate the roles of both banking sectors to foster a balanced and resilient economy.

    Narrative and Family Business Firms: A Discourse Framework Toward Continuity and Competitiveness
    (2020)
    ;
    Family business firms (FBFs) constantly struggle with the challenge of successfully reaching and surviving beyond the third generation. Narrative or storytelling is frequently used in business to transmit knowledge, achieve goals, create and maintain a connection with stakeholders, and achieve sustained growth. Most FBFs consciously or unconsciously use narrative and possess their own discourse, which is unique to every family and family business and which may aid FBFs in achieving continuity. FBFs must have an adequate atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation so that group members can transform acquired tacit knowledge through storytelling into explicit action. FBFs should be prepared to help collaborators and other stakeholders build competencies since tacit knowledge transfer, through narrative, can aid in the solving of problems, enhance innovativeness, and improve strategic decision-making. Therefore, narrative may well aid FBFs in fulfilling their ultimate goal of continuity. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the potential influence of narrative on FBFs’ continuity and prevention of their precipitous expiration. This chapter contributes to previous literature that sheds light on the narrative implications of FBFs, and depicts FBFs’ narratives and the dynamics of their business objectives, as well as touches on the heterogeneous nature of each family business’ storyline. There are various advantages to FBFs’ storytelling; perhaps the most noteworthy is the achievement of sustained business growth and continuity. © 2020 Emerald Publishing Limited.
