    A Systems Science Approach to Organizational Integrity. Case: Services Small and Medium Enterprises
    (Taylor & Francis, 2021) ; ;
    Carlos López-Hernández
    ;
    ;
    Pedro Pablo Cardoso-Castro
    This study developed a model oriented to organizational integrity in services small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A systemic approach was adopted to articulate methodologies as follows: A) We used the soft systems methodology to frame the problem and formulate a conceptual model. B) Partial least squares path modeling was applied to validate the construct statistically. C) The viable system model was used to realign interactions within SMEs to foster organizational integrity. The results suggest that the relationships proposed in the construct may promote organizational integrity. The ideas developed are constrained to the organizational domain, and although the results apply to the Mexican context, this study provides an opportunity to discuss methods for improving the analysis of and viewpoints for rethinking viability in these organizations; while suggesting an analytic protocol to support academics and managers for addressing the study of integrity.

    An Organizational Framework for Microenterprises to Face Exogenous Shocks: A Viable System Approach
This study examines how integrating the critical components of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) can improve the adaptability of microenterprises by applying the Viable System Model (VSM). Given the crucial role of microenterprises in job creation, entrepreneurship promotion, and social cohesion, the need for approaches that ensure their success in turbulent environments is highlighted. We applied Social Network Analysis (SNA) to analyze a co-occurrence network to identify critical EO factors relevant to microenterprises and to understand how authors relate them to the structure of the VSM using a Californian microenterprise as a conceptual model. These factors include innovation, autonomy, control implementation, market orientation, and change management, organized into the five functions of the VSM. The results suggest that this conceptual framework strengthens organizational responsiveness in disruptive environments, promoting internal cohesion and more informed decision-making. Although the specific characteristics of each microenterprise require adjusting the VSM to their particular needs, this study provides a solid basis for applying the key elements of EO in the VSM, underscoring the need for further research to adapt this approach to different contexts to improve organizational agility in the face of exogenous shocks.

    Systemic Design for Food Self-Sufficiency in Urban Areas
    (2020) ;
    Norman Aguilar-Gallegos
    ;
    ;
    Pedro Pablo Cardoso-Castro
This article adopts a systemic approach to address the problem of the operationalization of relationships between actors conducive to food self-sufficiency in urban areas. Through the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA), the literature on urban agriculture was analyzed, detecting eight key trends and topic areas. This information was used to design a generic recursive organizational structure with the identification of the key roles and functions for management and governance in the multi-level and multi-stakeholder relationships of a sustainable urban self-sufficient food production system, inspired by the principles of complexity management and organizational cybernetics. Methodologically, this is the first application that combines the exploratory capability of SNA and the recursive structure of the Viable System Model (VSM) to propose applicable organizational structures in any urban area, suggesting a new route for the study and application of systemic thinking in the development of urban agriculture schemes. However, due to the conceptual nature of this work, this study opens a discussion on how we can rethink interactions to seek continuous adaptation in food self-sufficiency, provide tools that foster inclusion, and adapt to every context to support the relevant actors and academics in urban agriculture.

    Factors to Foster Organizational Sustainability in Tourism SMEs
Small and medium-sized tourism companies (SMEs) strongly depend on their collaborators to achieve competitiveness and sustainability. In this sense, these organizations need to identify those factors that help them to use their resources and efforts to achieve the aforementioned goals. This article proposes a model oriented to organizational sustainability in the tourism sector. A systemic approach was adopted to articulate this research; therefore, the soft systems methodology was applied to structure the problem and express a conceptual model that suggests relationships as an alternative solution to the expressed problem. Partial least squares path modeling was applied to statistically validate the relationships expressed in the construct. Results suggest that the relationships proposed in the construct are valid and may promote organizational sustainability. The ideas developed are restricted to the organizational domain and although the results apply in a Mexican context, this potential limitation can be offset by the multi-methodological approach proposed, extending the model’s application to other types of organizations. This study may enable scholars and managers to improve communication and inter-organizational relationships, allowing organizations to focus their strategies and efforts using systems thinking to increase responsiveness and adaptation.

    Structural Equation Modeling for Analyzing Pro-Environmental Behavior in Switzerland
Using data from Round 11 of the European Social Survey, covering Switzerland, this article employs Structural Equation Modeling to investigate the associations between psychosocial factors and pro-environmental behavior. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, which integrates subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and attitudes to predict behavioral intentions and actual pro-environmental behaviors. The findings reveal that perceived social norms are strong predictors of pro-environmental behavioral intentions, illustrating the power of expectations from other people on the propensity to act sustainably. However, the effects of attitudes toward the environment and perceived behavioral control on behavioral intention were minimal or unobserved. It indicates that respondents may support environmental and sustainability issues, but this is often not matched by strong intentions to act. Additionally, the perceived control over pro-environmental behavior does not directly affect actual behavior. This suggests that external barriers may prevent individuals from performing sustainable behavior, even if they are motivated. The measurement invariance across gender groups was also examined in the study, which is essential to confirm the equivalence of measurements, and observed differences in latent variables could not be an artifact due to potential measurement bias. The findings suggest that subjective norms and pro-environmental behaviors are more likely to be higher among women, while men scored higher on perceived control. This indicates that women internalize social expectations stronger than men do to act, but for men, they feel able to act, but this confidence does not imply action. This research focuses on the significance of social influences in ecologically friendly action and on the discrepancies between intention and behavior. This study adds to our understanding of the determinants of pro-environmental behavior, providing relevant insights for policymakers to inform more effective interventions that close the gap between awareness and action.

    Determining the Factors to Improve Sustainable Performance in a Medium-Sized Organization
Small- and medium-sized organizations rely heavily on their internal configuration to achieve sustainable performance. However, their internal structure often represents an obstacle to achieving that goal. To help organizations achieve sustainable performance, we develop a research framework using the viable system model (VSM) to evaluate the relationship between organizational factors. We adopt a systems perspective: (1) The VSM serves as a theoretical foundation to define factors to be evaluated through a conceptual model; (2) social network analysis to obtain information for the conceptual model; (3) partial least squares path modeling to test the proposed model with 150 employees; and (4) VSM to suggest changes. The nine hypotheses are supported, suggesting that improving sustainable performance is related to adopting a network structure and focusing on relational factors to reduce inconsistencies between operations and coordination systems. This article differs from previous studies, as it proposes a methodological coupling to assist decision-makers in improving organizational balance and performance. Additionally, it can encourage academics to reconsider structural factors, enabling them to allocate resources more precisely and enhance effectiveness.
