Due to the 2020 scenario, the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus prompted a substantial change in the methods used by teachers when teaching and implementing their classes. As a support mechanism for teachers in the face of the radical change from physical presence to virtual presence, two courses were designed by the School of Pedagogy of the Universidad Panamericana: the first on Instructional Design and the second on didactic tools that enhance interaction and revitalization of classes. The summer of 2020 was the ideal time to train and prepare teachers in the instructional design of online classes because, although the educational model of the university is face-to-face, the circumstances and health limitations forced a strategic change to carry on with the quality that characterizes the institution. The preliminary results that we analyze with the SPSS software indicate that for 90.5% of the teachers the content of the course contributed to their professional development and that 87.2% have sufficient elements to redesign their subject for the following semester, which is executed in virtual mode.

Systematic Review of Literature on Lean and Six Sigma in Healthcare and Directions for Future Research

Healthcare organizations have increasingly turned to Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) as management systems to achieve quality and efficiency in patient care. This study aims to classify this body of literature and to discover factors that enable and prevent successful LSS implementations. Peer-reviewed literature in journals that were published through 2018 in English language were sought through a search of multiple databases. The inclusion criterion was broad in that all areas of healthcare and interpretations of LSS were considered. The literature search yielded 368 publications. One third of the studies present a U.S. affiliation and only 19% has been conducted in developing countries. The case study is the most popular study type but only represents around 52% of the body of literature. Lean and the ED are preferred approach and setting, respectively. Factors that enable and prevent successful implementation were grouped by Managerial, Preparation, People, and Project relationships. There is a need for future literature to provide a longitudinal balanced view on the benefits and challenges of implementations, and for studies to follow experimental designs for statistical validity. This is the most inclusive review about LSS in healthcare as it includes different study types, healthcare settings and LSS tools together.

A new paradigm in solid waste collection systems design and operation

A new solid waste collection model, called MST, has been developed. It is a result of combining System Thinking and Aggregation Theory and it takes into account real world constraints such as collection frequency, labor shifts and both preventive and corrective maintenance. MST is a paradigm shift in solid waste collection systems design and operation. It makes possible a more efficient utilization of resources (vehicles and labor) and it is robust against variability sources. MST is the result of having challenged and invalidated a deeply rooted assumption in all models developed up to date. Simulation and Design Of Experiments were used to compare MST against existing models. Experimental resultsshow significant reduction in the number of trips(Up to 33%), crews(Up to 49%) and vehicles (Up to 40%), which means dramatic operation cost and investment improvements. ©International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS).

Wear in ultrafine hardmetal mills manufactured by sinter + HIP

Ultrafine WC-Co milling tools were wear-tested in finishing machining conditions. Mills manufactured in the laboratory followed the powder metallurgy route for ultrafine grades. Total density in hardmetal grades of 0.2 and 0.4 μm was achieved through the Sinter + HIP technique. Wear in laboratory mills was compared with wear in coarse and ultrafine grade commercial mills. All mills cutting edges suffered wear mainly in the abrasive and chipping form. Chipping was excessive and peculiar in form in the laboratory mills; a slight presence of the fragile η phase was discovered. Laboratory mills showed similar wear to the commercial coarse grades, and much more than that of commercial ultrafine grades. A lack of toughness is suggested due to a small difference in the WC mean grain size, in the Co mean free path (λ) and in its distribution: homogeneous in laboratory mills and heterogeneous in the commercial ones. ©Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF)
