<jats:p>Medications known as ‘cognitive enhancers’ are increasingly being consumed off-label by healthy people, raising concerns about their safety. The aim of our study was to profile behavioral performance upon oral administration of methylphenidate (2.5 mg/kg) and modafinil (64 mg/kg) – two popular cognitive enhancers – and upon their discontinuation. We modeled cognitively demanding challenges in neurotypical individuals using a behavioral task where Wistar<jats:italic toggle="yes">–</jats:italic>Lewis rats had to withhold responses for a specified time to obtain food rewards. This task allowed us to extract several measures of behavioral performance associated with clinically meaningful indices, such as compulsive-like responding, incapacity to wait (impulsivity), time estimation (precision and accuracy), and attentional lapses. Our study design involved examining these behavioral indices in subjects administered either methylphenidate, modafinil, or vehicle. We found that subjects administered modafinil obtained fewer rewards and were less efficient in reward pursuing than the vehicle group; this result was likely due to a drug-induced inability to wait. Upon modafinil discontinuation, subjects earned more rewards but did not entirely catch up with the vehicle group. As for methylphenidate, neither favorable nor unfavorable effects were found in our main analyses. However, an exploratory analysis of changes in behavioral performance within sessions suggested that methylphenidate fostered favorable, yet short-lived, effects. We discuss our results in terms of the risks and cost-benefits of doses above or below the effective dose of cognitive enhancement drugs.</jats:p>

La construcción de la paz en la escuela: múltiples miradas desde la investigación, las intervenciones y las políticas públicas

La escuela tiene como objetivo que el ser humano alcance la plenitud, promoviendo en el estudiante el desarrollo de las potencialidades que lo lleven a conseguir una convivencia armoniosa con su entorno, así como el logro de sus metas y aspiraciones en un marco de equilibrio sustentable. En este marco epistémico, un conjunto de investigadores de diversos países decidieron crear un compendio de propuestas de trabajo que ponen a disposición información relevante para promover la cultura de paz en la escuela. A través de estas propuestas se demuestra que se pueden aprender actitudes favorecedoras de un clima de aprendizaje positivo, seguro y real, tanto en la escuela como en la familia, encaminadas a la búsqueda del equilibrio, el bienestar, la felicidad y la construcción de la paz mundial. Los investigadores aportan una síntesis de sus proyectos de investigación, programas de intervención, enfoques teóricos o propuestas de políticas públicas, con el fin de tener una guía que permita a los interesados en la escuela como institución que promueve la construcción de la paz, ubicar temas, métodos, prácticas o resultados y, en su caso, establecer contacto con los propios investigadores o sus equipos de investigación.

<jats:p>This article explores the use of generative artificial intelligence in Latin American university libraries, discussing both its potential benefits and challenges. It emphasizes how generative artificial intelligence, which is capable of generating text, video, images, music, and code, is revolutionizing library operations by automating tasks and enhancing research and reference services. The research involved a literature review and interviews with library directors from six prominent universities, revealing varied levels of generative artificial intelligence adoption, from experimental to fully integrated within institutional frameworks. The challenges include staff resistance, training deficiencies, and technological constraints. The study is optimistic about the future of generative artificial intelligence in academic libraries, recommending ongoing training and clear policy development for its successful and ethical implementation. Major service providers like EBSCO, Clarivate, and Elsevier are also noted for their role in supporting this digital transition.</jats:p>
